/sci/ ask a polymath anything.
>>
what are your areas of proficiency?

whats a polymath?
>>
>>8170164
Good question. My areas of proficiency include anthropology, history, philosophy, mathematics, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, quantum physics, bioengineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and much more.
>>
>>8170169
Someone who's knowledgeable in many subjects.
>>
>>8170161
What practical thing can you do with your knowledge that most ordinary people cannot?
>>
>>8170172
What is your research focus in bioengineering?

thanks in advance
>>
>>8170172
Can you clarify the much more part? Is it twice as much as what you already wrote down? Does it include origami and tying your shoes?
>>
>>8170192
As a polymath, I enjoy analysing the patterns and layers of human speech; puns, sarcasm, innuendos, etc. And analyse the body language of people in order to determine their overall psychology. That's a practical use of my experience in studying psychology.
>>
>>8170172

In a purely probabilistic sense, it's much more likely that you're full of yourself than that you're a polymath. Can you convince us quickly by stating a series of obscure facts or interesting original ideas in several of these areas? No sense in beating around the bush.

>>
Some of your favorite philosophers, books, movies, music?

My research focus is regenerative medicine.

>>
hey do you measure your wang in cm or inches?
>>
>>8170228
True, and I agree with you. But what kind of obscure facts would convince you? If I do mention a series of obsecure facts, I'll look like I'm full of myself again, thus defeating the point.
>>
>>8170258
No, it proves the point to the anon who asked. You can be a polymath and be full of yourself. Too late for you to prove anything now though, convinced you're retarded.
>>
>>8170161
What are the connected components of [math]\prod_{i=1}^{\infty} \mathbb{R}[/math] with the box topology?
>>
>>8170233
I quite enjoy Nietzsche, even though he's a bit inconsistent. The recent book I've read and is quickly becoming a favourite is the 48 Laws of Power. I love Pulp Fiction. And I enjoy classical music, especially Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.
>>
>>8170265

Oh good quantum physics; can you give a summary of the proof of the Jahn-Teller effect using group theory please?
>>
How is being unemployed treating you?
>>
>>8170271
>>8170265
I have studied this problem for quite a while. If my calculations are correct the connected components have a sum of -1/12 .
>>
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm quite saddened that you think I'm a troll or a bait. I'm genuinely a polymath. However, there seems to be a misconception that a polymath is a master of all subjects. But the truth is, a polymath is a jack of all trades but a master of none.
>>
Dear OP: if you came here to see if you could pull it off, you're kind of full of yourself but you're alright, we can be friends still.

If you came here because you actually think several years of sporadic Googling and a couple college courses coupled with a comparatively ignorant group of peers makes you a "polymath" then back to the books with you!

I thought this sort of thing when I was like 18 and started to be shocked by just how well-learned people can actually be.
>>
dl you know everything deeply or simply at the surface level?

surface level. i watch youtube videos mostly.

Also, what is your favorite movement? many people say the first but I much prefer the intensity of the third

Fields of study have become so complicated and compartmentalized today that this isn't possible in the same way it used to be. Human collective knowledge is far to great.

And being a FUCK YEAH SCIENCE fedora who reads r/askscience religiously, watches Vsauce, and just regurgitates what experts say doesn't count as a polymath.

>The truth is, a polymath is a jack of all trades but a master of none.

So, you mean how the majority of the population tends to have surface knowledge about many subjects? I guess that makes you a lot less special, as by your own 'definition', practically anyone can claim to be a 'polymath'.

Do note, your definition is wrong, as a polymath is actually defined as: "a person whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas." And by your own admission you aren't an expert, or more accurately its synonym, 'master': "a master of none."

I rest my case, you verbose, hyperbolic, charlatan. You're probably nothing more than a dilettante, like much of /sci/ and 4chan in general.
>>
>>8170551
>So, you mean how the majority of the population tends to have surface knowledge about many subjects?
What population are you talking about? The average person is a high school dropout who can't math and thinks anything they don't understand is stupid.

Where did you find that definition? I checked multiple online dictionaries including Merriam-Webster and did not see "expertise" or "master" anywhere -- at best I found "knowledge" and "learning".
>>
>>8170542

>>
>>8170542
A polyglot that does not know the English word for polyglot even with red squigglies suggesting to him that he spelled it wrong. Believable.
>>
>>8170542
>polygot

Do you mean 'polyglot'? To note, that shows you do not have mastery of either English or Greek, as 'polyglot' is a borrowed word with a Grecian root.
>>
>>8170545
>Indian

India doesn't have a single tongue, due to varied ethic groups and religions.
>>
>>8170557
Because a polymath is only limited to STEM? Oh wait, no, many of your 'fields' are humanity based, I guess you contradicted yourself again.

OP is faggot confirmed. Everyone go home.

>>8170571
By the way, the widely spoken tongue within India is 'Hindi', not 'Indian'. If you actually spoke it, you'd know that.

Since I'm both a polymath and a polyglot, people get jealous, which is understadable. This explains the attacks whenever a flaw appears in my texts.
>>
>>8170585

>>
>>8170585
You made up a language and claimed to speak it, whilst also showing a lack of semantic understanding and a gross ignorance of Greek; a language you're apparently 'fluent' in. - Just give up, you're a shitty polymath.
>>
>>8170580
I'm sorry for 'making up a language.' As I said, I don't have the advantage of writing clearly right now. However, what evidence do you require? I explained that I cannot provide any absolute evidence in this environment.
>>
>>8170602
You said you spoke 'Indian', yet in India the official languages of the state are English and Hindi. Whereas, in reality, there isn't that much of a unified tongue as there are so many different ethnic and religious groups in India.

I bet Clinton wishes he could've just blamed his fingers, or the cigar.
>>
>>8170161
Why haven't we heard of you before? The one great threat to intelligence is comfort. Once you become comfortable to a seat at a table, you assume everyone is equal at the table. When you sits down and proclaims superiority, you all become cowards. A real genius won't cower or fear in anonymity. They pray and play humans like a little girl plays with dolls. If OP is not role playing, he should proclaim his true identity and answer this question.

What is your greatest achievement in science?
>>
>>8170629
Having fingers, capable of creating a language, whilst entirely separate of the executive function of my mind.
>>
>>8170629
Shit, I made an ass of myself faster than a christian on a morale parade. Forget the spelling and grammar errors, the bottom line is that OP is claiming superiority( false authority) when no one has challenged it. In my opinion OP should still answer the questions imposed.
>>
>>8170635
I've been challenging him (obviously) for over half-an-hour.
>>
>>8170631
Mind the errors friend, the context is far more interesting. Unless you prefer to answer to bait. Yes I made errors, and yes I've had a few mind altering activities which weren't justified. The point of focus is that OP has made a claim of superiority and no one has challenged it. We should demand a name and ask what their greatest achievement was into science. This should demolish certain low level beliefs and acknowledge true hierarchy. Something you should all be doing instinctfully given the circumstances of this board.
>>
>>8170641
That insult was levied at your expense, but directed at the moral fibre of OP.
>>
>>8170639
Wasting half an hour of your time on a false identity is your own undoing. You should have known from the beginning such as I have that this is a ego boost. OP has had less than their fulfillment in feeling superior recently. Probably affairs or work related activities. Perhaps school related if it is truly this stupid.

As for you, the person who spent half and hour antagonizing OP, a little psychology would tell you this is a false claim on identity.
>>
>>8170646
Meanwhile you have been doing? I've barely entered this board.

>>8170647
I was aware, but I've always enjoyed drowning puppies.

I'm not OP, you're OP, OP. Also, you're drunk, OP.
>>
>>8170675
Before you type your response, let me remind you that I've called on your impairment for wasting 30 minutes on OP. So either you are hiding behind a veil of ambiguity to show off as intelligence (OP) or you are simply this stupid to spend 30 minutes with OP regardless of emotional affairs. I'm convicting myself of talking to a stupid person while I'm purposely made myself stupid by stupid actions. After I sober up I can dominate your ass in any debate in any subject. In the mean time this is entertaining while I am intoxicated. I ask again. What is your excuse?
>>
>>8170682
Answer the question or you admit you should have known from the beginning or you truly are OP and should express your true identity. No one is perfect, no one here is some great scientist. Confess you fool.
>>
>>8170689
>>8170685

In any regards, should anyone here try to contact me before I abruptly leave I can be contacted by emailing biagonist at gmail. I should suspect OP to send me an email for apologizing to creating a stupid thread.

This is quite interesting as I am actually a polyglot (the linguist from /int/ who specialises in Indic languages and is mapping out dialects of Punjabi) and a polymath, with my areas of interest spanning from anthropology to cosmology.

So I’d like to ask OP a few questions.

I’d also like to note that I don’t go around referring to myself as a polymath, but have decided to do so for the purposes of this thread.
>>
>>8170545
>>8170656

It's referred to as Hindustani.

Hindi and Urdu are two formalised registers of one language, known to linguists as Hindustani.

I'm the other polyglot and 'polymath' who just posted.

Ok OP, since you’ve just stated you speak fluent ‘Indian’ and Urdu:

Bhaai saahib, ye bataaie…

Kya aap ke khayaal se Pakistan sayaasi taur par mazboot hai?

Yaani, lagta hai ke mazboot nahin hai, qaas taur se Hindustan ke muqabile men aur kyion ki Afghanistan ka kinaara bahut khatarnaak hai aaj kul.

Aap kya sochte hain, is baaton ke baare men?

>>
OP has failed to respond to my Urdu post and my post comprised of five languages that he/she claims to speak.
>>
>>8171269
OP is probably full of shit but OP is probably also gone by now, be patient.
>>
>>8171275

But I'm feeling a bit manic and have just had a coffee; patience is very difficult right now.

Also when I said that I was also a ‘polymath’, I simply meant ‘a person whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas’, however I will clarify that it is to a general level.

I was assuming OP meant the same thing, however I doubt it now.

The polymath of the Renaissance period is long dead, as scientific fields have become far too complex for anyone one person to have a detailed grasp more than a couple at best, let alone the whole scope of human knowledge.

It’s not the 1400s any more.
>>
I would like to formally apologise to all of those I kept waiting, and for my elusiveness. I've been busy with some meetings and negotiations, as such I wasn't able to contribute to this enlightening conversation.

A great number of people on here think that I'm no more than a charlatan, but the truth is that my claims are genuine.

The sceptics and doubters might say, this is all an elaborate prank made to fool everyone.

And they might be right: From their own perspective, they don't know me. So why would they believe my claims?

To this I say, indulge in scepticism. It's only when you've become sceptics will you be able to differentiate between the truths and the falsehoods. And I hope that I'm omitted from the falsehoods when you've inspected me fully.

Yes, you missed what I said because you are not fluent in the five languages I used to compose those utterances.

>>
>>8171460

I'm a polyglot, who just asked you to translate a series of utterances made in five languages that you claim to speak fluently, and you failed to do so.

I don't call myself a ‘polymath’ because that is an outdated term that belongs to the likes of renaissance men, such as da Vinci and Galileo.

It isn’t possible to have a detailed grasp on a broad spectrum of scientific fields in this day and age, however one can still learn a great deal about many of them.

As my interests and knowledge base spans a broad collection of fields, then I’ll wincingly refer to myself as a polymath for the purposes of this thread.

To everyone else ITT:

I’ll answer any question put to me in a logical and wholly non-political manner, and guess what if I don’t know something or have no grounding in a subject area, I’ll just tell you that I have no idea.

You're a polyglot, and I acknowledge that. But not all polyglots are equal.

The idea that 'polymath' is an outdated term and isn't useable or meaningful anymore is no more than a way for people to tell themselves that they cannot excel at multiple subjects, and become as great as Da Vinci, for example. I'm a living example of a polymath.

'Marcel Barbeau': you just Google Marcel and abstract expressionists, the search algorithm puts it all together for you.
>>
>>8171556

Not OP, but the actual polyglot who keeps singing in Hindi.

Marcel was dismayed and perhaps somewhat perplexed by the complexity inherent in attempting to define the Abstract movement, as it cannot be defined by the mere disappearance of the figure on the canvas.

It is this lack of definition that opens the floodgates to painting in absence of style well defined by the not simply the dominant culture of the time, but in fact any well-defined artistic bounds, which Marcel saw as a slovenly mockery of the art, but which also compelled him to dedicate an entire book to the issue.

He saw abstract art as the production of deformity.

I hope I'll be able to answer all of your questions, however if I do not provide an answer to a question then it might be due to one of the following reasons:

3.Your question is not serious, and is for mocking purposes.

I'm OP. I would suggest that you read more of German and Russian literature, and try grasping the language as best as you can. Observe the language of such writers like Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Göethe, Nietzsche, etc. And if you have the opportunity, speak with the natives of the language and interact with them more. Understanding the logic behind a language will improve your sentence structure and grammar.

(For German) I'd say I can speak at a somewhat intermediate level. I can compose basic statements and can probably read elementary school German texts with ease. I watch a lot of movies with German subtitles so I can develop a more intuitive sense of the language. When I say intuitive I mean being able to tell when a sentence sounds/looks incorrect. I do this because my grammar/sentence structure is rubbish. What my real question is I suppose is, how do you learn sentence structure and grammar effectively? I'm not so much worried with Russian because German is more interesting to me but I enjoy both. My Russian is in a beginner stage, I can introduce myself, read/write/speak the alphabet, basic numbers, etc. Thanks for any help you can provide.

>>
>>8176542

I said 'ya khochu gavaryu' instead of 'ya khochu gavareet'.

When pulling words from multiple languages out of the brain at the same time, it's likely that conjugation will be ignored and the underlying meaning will be prioritised.

So it was bound to happen at least once.

That's one mistake, while speaking in five different languages, in series utterances that I made up on the spot, off the top of my head.

As for pronunciation, the same thing goes as I barely had time to warm up in any language, before switching to another, so my pronunciation was bound to be off.

>I've proved that I'm a polyglot and a polymath more than once on here

Where? Where have you done that?

You've already failed both my tests, so I'm quite certain that you're not a polyglot.

Point out where you have provided evidence for your polymath abilities.

This is a thread was made by an anon claiming to be a polymath and a polyglot.

I tested him and he failed.

That post was simply evidence of an earlier claim.

Why would I be posting anonymously, if I wanted attention?

Think before you post fagggot.
>>
This thread is fucking cringy, and yoy still haven't showed your EE knowledge. Fuck off
>>

Ok faggot, have fun not being a polyglot.

anon, i never claimed to be able to do it.

I only came here to test OP, and help anons with languages.

Which I have done.

Therefore, I shall leave now and delete the images of my work.

See you later, wank puffins.

Ok anon.

I dont know. Thats why I suggested you getting a trip, since you seem to be exactly that kind of faggot.

Thank you.

>>8176743

I deleted the images, as apparently nobody had an interest in them and the genuine desire to share work was mistaken for some kind of odd anonymous show boating.

No need to hide the thread, I just left it, but am now replying from the front page, as I just saw these two replies.

I'm happy to float away into the sea of anons now, I only poked my head out due to the language related nature of the thread.
>>
>>8176755
It's okay, no need to get worked up. We can still be friends, in case you want to learn how be be a successful polyglot, or a polymath.

>>8176759

Well, I did bite so congratulations.

Moral of the story: Don't claim to be an authority you're not, lest you be caught in your own lies.

I hope "polyglot" anon becomes more humble.

As for now, I hope I'm able to satisfy any questions posed to me.

>Moral of the story: Don't claim to be an authority you're not, lest you be caught in your own lies.

You were caught in your own lies.

Here:

>>8171436
>>8171445

I wasn't caught in any lies.

I provided evidence of my language ability and my work on Indic languages.

An anon simply took umbrage to me imperfectly pronouncing three words of Russian while speaking in five languages, alternating the language an average of every four words.

I have no idea why he became so upset about it, but he did and that's that.

I didn’t claim to be anything I’m not.

You did, however and you have failed to provide evidence of your abilities.

On top of that, you effectively failed to translate the audio recording, thereby providing evidence against your claims made here >>8170545
>>
>>8176806
Dear God! You really hate it when you're wrong. I guess no one can blame you or convince you that you're really wrong. You will always think you're right. So sad!
>>
>>8176819

>I guess no one can blame you or convince you that you're really wrong.

I'm wrong all the time.

However, I haven't claimed to be anything that I'm not or said anything 'incorrect' ITT.

If you think I have, please provide a clear example, as I have for OP.
>>
>>8176403
How do you read the literature? Do you need to have pretty strong vocab before you start doing that? Or do you have a side by side translation while reading? Please explain
>>
>>8176837
You don't need a strong vocabulary to read, you need to read in order to improve your vocabulary. A side by side translation would be very helpful, but you have to sniff the spirit of the language and learn the mechanisms of it. Read more!
>>
>>8176837
You have to expose yourself to the language as best as you can, and only then will you be fluent.

There is no universally accepted criterion for distinguishing between closely related languages and dialects, however if a number of regional dialects connecting a broader chain of mutually intelligible dialects (constituting a dialect continuum) die out, then mutual intelligibility can be severed, which would effectively divide the remaining dialects into non-mutually intelligible dialect chains, which could thereafter be defined as two separate languages.

This sort of thing typically occurs in regions where closely related languages bleed into one another, for example in the foothills of Kashmir.

What are you talking about? Unique factorization domains and principle ideal domains? You find that in the group theory chapter of your standard abstract algebra book.
>>

>UFD and PID
>group theory
try ring theory you incompetent buffoon
>>
>>8177015
Yeah that makes sense. I studied UFD's and PID's after studying some group theory and just sorta carelessly lumped them together in my mind but yes, that is actually ring theory. My mistake, sorry for letting you down.

I haven't studied functional analysis but to my understanding, you're talking about normed vector spaces and shit linked together with analysis. I don't see how that connects with UFD's and PID's, I mean, if there's a way to bring field theory into it, I can vaguely see perhaps how. Do UFD's and PID's actually appear in functional analysis or was that bullshit?
