All of that is done using matter and there's absolutely no reason to assume that consciousness is different. It's just how it works. "Why" doesn't matter, and you can ask whatever questions you want, and make up whatever reasons you want. That's why there is no hard problem of consciousness. It asks questions about what isn't there.

Actually, it may be...IBM's Watson assembles information into an answer with an output that resembles a human's, but using an entirely different process. It's not hard to envision a machine capable of fooling a human, Turing test style, but with nothing like a human process of reflection and recollection. It may have a consciousness, but one that operates in fits and starts, as it's forced to "slow down" to human levels of operation in order to communicate with us.

(Pic related was about such a machine...it could overcome the issue of being trapped by its creator, but had no "moral compass" to guide it, and so, left the human that helped it escape to die)

Why is subjective experience magical?
This whole thing feels like a poorly defined word game. We experience things with way we experience them because of the way our brains work. Asking why a brain that's capable of of observing it's surroundings and using that information to understand them has an "experience" is akin to asking why a car that provides traction and steering is capable of driving - it's because that's what we name the thing it does.

That's because they are encoded into bits, and then retained in binary form. It is not the photos themselves which are stored, but a code which represents (or corresponds to) the photo. You cannot actually see the photo by opening up your hard drive and looking at the platter. You need the correct equipment to decode the binary and project the image.

The equipment matters because you are not physically taking an image and stuffing into a container. You are creating a code which corresponds to that image and writing the code onto a storage medium. "Causes" in the strict physics sense requires two distinct phenomena. The impact of a bowling ball causes the pins to fall over, and the impact and the falling over are seperate. The mind isn't a entirely distinct thing from the brain though, it's a description of the function of the brain.

I suspect a stricter description might be that "the mind is the brain's perception of it's own cognition", but I'm open to being wrong on that.

If I hold the belief that consciousness is some sort of elemental property of the universe in the same way that spacetime or gravity is, would that not count as dualism, because it's seperate from the physical framework that we understand? If you're referring to the experience we carry as humans, it is easily explained by physical interactions. Our eyes are stimulated by light, producing signals that are communicated to the brain for processing. Our sensory organs in general receive some stimulus via physical interaction with some phenomena (light, direct contact, reactions to chemicals), and produce some output to the brain via physical interactions. Humans are physical computers. Not silicon-based, but the information we process is based on how matter interacts with us. We are the most complex computer that will exist for the next 100 years.

The problem you defined does not exist, it is merely the wrong one. The true problem with consciousness is discovering how the body operates with respect to these physical interactions. Computers have some degree of consciousness, but biological/chemical computers using other types of physical interactions to transfer information are much more complex. Squirrels, for example, are much more complex than AlphaGo, Google's AI capable of outplaying the world's best humans in the game Go.

The brain actually, at all times, expends a great amount of energy solely to maintain systems that allow it to NOT generate an action potential and fire. Why does there exist the watcher, or the doer, or the seer? Don't know, again. No one does. At that point I'm more apt to reject that objective reality is anything like we think, or if it even exists at all. I've had a lot of very strange things happen in my life, many of which I can't properly explain. A lot of which came in the form of dreams. Some where profound insights are delivered to me by another being. Some where I have a different body, or no body at all. Some recurring, mostly focused around the number 4. If there is anything that it feels like, that feeling is consciousness. Consciousness is the "what it is like" to be something. It is presumably not like anything to be a rock, or even a tree. But humans and probably other animals actually experience things. There is something that it is like to be human. That is consciousness.

Scientific evidence is based on the assumption that what we observe outside our minds is real or how it actually is. The evidence of consciousness is not subject to those assumptions because observation is what consciousness is. Before we can talk about evidence in any sense we must be capable of observation, which is conscious experience.

Consciousness might just be the way we experience the chemical processes of our brain, but it is experience. And that experience is what consciousness is. The hard problem is figuring out how chemical processes can give rise to subjective experience at all.

Did you really begin to sense and process information on your own or were you taught to do such by higher level beings, did you come up with this idea of self on your own or was it given to you?

Also some people claim self can be broken down into mind body and soul where one or the other is used to prove the others and it is all justified by an omnipotent benevolent god.

I don't think conscious experience is neccesary to make observations about what goes on in the supposed real world. You could build a fairly simple robot that with observation is cabable of navigating that world. I think observation is ultimately seperate from experience and more directly connected to brain functions and the easy problems. Unless you're arguing for idealism, where the robot is ultimately a mental construct. I do agree though that it's easy to take consciousness for granted and not question it much because it is part of the framwork used to understand the world.

You missed the earlier part of the conversation where someone was basically saying the material world can't be known for certain because only your subjective experience is undeniably true while I am saying subjective experience can't really be known for certain because one perspective is the easiest thing to trick.
