Can we take a moment to thank this man
>>
>>8157661
what did he contribute?
>>
>>8157665
He took a huge part in popularizing science. Cosmos ( the original) and many other quests he went on to better general understanding of the scientific world.
lest we forget a pale blue dot
>>
>>8157673
why should I thank him for popularizing science? my parents educated me about science way before that dude. and their parents, my grandparents, educated them.
>>
>>8157665
He supported women in science
>>
>>8157673
>>8157681
so he's basically cancer.
popularizing science means more stemfags, which means more competition and less job quality.

thanks carl shitgan.
>>
Thank you based Sagan. However dont expect /sci/ to appreciate the education of the masses. They would rather keep humanity in a decaying state.
>>
>>8157676
Same here, however you know that is not the case in majority of households around the world. ( lets put areas like the middle east aside..focus on the "western world" eurofags and amerifags)
Think how many people would not get exposer to this vital information of how the most basic stuff in the universe works..
When man has no explanation to a phenomena, imagination takes hold. When that happens, assuming you rationalise using some type of method ( lets say the scientific method) to check yourself...you end up burning witches alive. Or stoping human progress for the sake of your own, twisted unbased ideals of this world.

you forgot to tip your fedora.
your misconceptions about religion are staggering.
>>

So why even have this thread at all ? For ages science has been yearning to be heard, spread, and understood. Keeping knowledge to once's self is just counter intuitive..
>>
>>8157693
yeah you said it, not even gonna try and reply to him. obviously parents didn't educate him about religion. I'm guessing we should now thank Morgan Freeman for popularizing faith with the show God so people like him could be more informed about it.
>>
>>8157696
being heard and spread is not the same as being popularized.
MTV wants to popularize and spread music to the people. that does not mean it's actually good music and that it's the best form there is. hence the term pop music and pop science.

howso
I would like to add an edit to that sentence:
"assuming you don't rationalise using some type of method"

Religon in my opinion from what I have gathered. Is a product of the human imagination..Something that we needed to help us with the weight of existence. When you look at existence or human life, there is no rational reason to keep living. One could even go on to say we are stuck in a Sisyphus type deal..where we roll a bolder up a hill only to repeat the same action over and over again..not knowing we have done so many times before.
religion, actually anything that has any type of faith, holds many to the ground. Even science is some type of belief, in a system that holds X Y Z to be true.
When people saw comets a few hundred years ago they thought of it as a bad omen, not knowing what it was. Now we know it is nothing more than a ball of ice and rock racing around the solar system..Do people still believe in it being a bad omen? fuck yeah..But it is no longer a theory that is relevant in society.

tl;dr religion is just a result of our psychological need to have faith.

Is it counter intuitive to keep knowledge to yourself? In evolutionary terms its quite advantageous for an individual to keep info for himself as a way of enhanced survival.
But thats not the point here, /sci/ is a board filled with anger filled beta nerds, so oversimplifying science and expose it to the masses makes them bitter because they feel their special skill is being ridicularised.
>>
>>8157699
Right, let me clarify.
I am talking about the abilty to get a spark going in someone's mind. To awaken some curiosity towards a subject ( this being science ). To get an individual to maybe not just be okay with reading the title and " knowing"..but rather have them understand, look into things on their own. The internet is the largest collection of information even made by man. Being it is full of porn and untrue shit. But even taking all that away you are left with so much knowledge to be acquired. from reading to getting into it, to studying it, to fucking changing or advancing the world ( with double rainbows n shit). That is what I mean..

Its easy to talk about this, or attempt to troll one ( you guys are horrible at it) behind a computer, cause it already exists. Someone had to go through all the steps of making all of this entire platform we are now using, for us to shitngiggle.
So the question asked is this: Are ya a hitchhiker or are you a part of life.
Living in a world someone else made for you is easy...the same as living off your parents money while you type how much you want moar bronie porn

>Religion in m opinion
then keep your opinion to yourself
>>
>le smoke weed everyday man
>>
>>8157706
I knew someone was going to say that..You are right, not going to argue.
However I feel that point is more relevant to technological advances...Be it weapon systems or 0day shit..But knowledge such as, 'how the world was made' or 'how atoms interact'..Has no real power to keep that to one's self. What power is gained by this? You can impress some fat chick at the pub?
I would much rather be able to actually talk about it, and explore it with people.
