Most people can only go to college because they're parents are paying for it. Unless I can get a decent job there's no way I'll get the credit needed for a student loan.
>>
>>8106729
Because it's a meme degree for people who can't make it in a real science.

CS is basically the "become a code monkey for $35k a year" degree.
>>
>>8103856
ending my junior year as a math major, pretty far ahead, no undergrad classes to take of any importance but real analysis, so i'm taking grad courses next year and studying under some profs

pretty good life tbqh senpai
>>
>>8103856
Studying molecular biology.

>>8106729
Most people here just don't like what CS undergraduate degrees have become, teaching you programming languages that you could learn on your own time, preparing you for code monkey jobs. I've been learning myself on my part time some of the programming they teach in CS courses, so the idea follows that you might as well not do a degree focused on that. Graduate school CompSci is respected here though as much as anything, and it is very interesting.

It just depends on the program. If your program is just code monkey training, it's basically just you paying for a meh tier job in the future. But if you have a well organized CS program (these are usually specialist programs from high ranking universities) then you're fine.
>>
>>8106946
lol. you're completely wrong. File your FAFSA. They'll give student loans to niggers for god's sake. They'll you give student loans and probably Pell grants (which are just free money). Interest rates are retarded low right now too. Sounds like you just don't want to move out of mommy's house.

My mom basically used me for money until my pell grant was damn near gone. I'm pretty much getting kicked out next week.
>>
>>8107237
Okay, so move the fuck out. Get a job washing dishes at a restaurant. Pay your bills. Take classes part time. Apply for internships. Once you get an internship, you'll have money to live on during the schoolyear so you can go to school full time. You'll also be independent, so you can take out your own loans.

This is almost exactly what I did. Now I'm >>8107214 this guy working on fucking fighter jets. Get out there and do it.

>>
>>8107309
I'm sure you spend at least an hour a day doing something relaxing. Some people relax by watching anime. Others relax by being a condescending douchebag on anonymous Siberian yurt building forums.

What do you daywalkers do/study? Gotta be something that gets you out of the house.
>>
>>8107319
No of course I do, I'm sorry if what I said seemed douchy. I read to relax. What I meant is the people who feel "bored" and waste their days watching anime or playing vidya. Naturally it's their life and it's their choice in the end, but I feel a tad bit sad because Humans have unlimited potential, and we could've advanced much more efficiently and faster where we to have more thinkers in the fields of science, engineering, etc.
>>
>>8105279
>any job you want
300k starting?
>>
>>8107331
Reading is passive media consumption just like watching anime or any other kind of tv show is. Vidya is probably more engaging than either. You clearly judge people based on their hobbies, so I'll just say, if you really want to practice what you're preaching here, you should be spending your free time developing arduino projects or building trebuchets or designing your own water purification system or something other than pleasure reading.

p.s. I ain't mad; I just like to point out logical inconsistencies.
>>
>What does /sci/ do?
Still in school, but other than that I work.
>What did /sci/ study?
I'm studying biochem+nanotech. Hoping to eventually work at a pharma/biotech firm working on drug delivery systems.
>>
>>8107338
>I ain't mad
>nobody implied that
You definitely mad, bro.
>>
>>8107338
You're saying that, but you don't know what exactly is it that I read. Yes in a form or another it's media consumption, but you can't compare it to playing vidya and watching anime. I read on topics that interest me in my field, as well as history, philosophy, psychology and medicine.
>>
>>8107349
I clearly said "waste their days", I never said anything about people who choose to put 1 hour or two into something they love to relax, I'm talking about people that actually spend most of their time on consuming entertainment.
>>

It's a great field honestly. I don't see where the whole "no jobs" idea started. if you actually care about what you major in, especially something as specific as astrophysics, you WILL find a program to work for.

How's university in Japan? Any big difference with the american and european systems?
>>
>>8109941
There has been research done on the Japanese educational system, they produce specialists and this is very true.
They have a specialized system so their education will prove a bit more difficult than American and European systems.
If you're planning on studying in Japanese (which is what I am doing) you will have to take a year or more of language, it gives you a good foundation of the language but you'll have to work your ass of.

>What does /sci/ do?
Psychologist at a psychiatric ward for children aged 7-12.

I mostly give estimates of the kids' cognitive abilities or their socio-emotional development based on various tests and observations. The test results can be useful as diagnostic tools, in giving leads as to what kind of interventions would benefit the child, and in answering what their schools need to know about their learning difficulties. Neuropsychological testing is especially interesting.

Psychology

I am an aerospace engineer working at SpaceX. Literally best job ever
>>8110185
I went in UMD for my bachelors in aerospace engineering, eventually got my masters at Cambridge, and I got a cozy internship with SpaceX. Now, I'm working with propulsion

>>8110185
Do you encounter any very gifted children? Also, how's the job?
>>
>>8110192
The children are mostly on the weak end of the intelligence spectrum. A few have had some very specific abilities that have have been outside the normal measurement range. For example, this 9-yo girl had poor overall cognitive abilities and half a dozen diagnoses, but her ability to recognise faces was literally off the charts.

The job is definitely demanding for a psychologist like myself with not many years of experience. Thankfully there's usually plenty of time to get acquainted with the patients, their history, previous test results etc. beforehand.

>What does /sci/ do?
Study maths after doing a year of Arts then Geology for a year
>what did /sci/ do
didn't think I could handle math in high school despite wanting to be an astrophysicist since age 10. I dropped it and did history. Didn't think history was worth a degree so went to geology which I liked because of oil drilling. Only liked geology for the exciting stuff and did a math paper on the side to fulfill Bsc requirements and really liked it. I did more and more maths until I desperately wanted to major in it and live out my dream again
