I have some thoughts on this. I think the subvocalization isn't a cause but an effect. The problem is the speed at which information is consumed by the retina relative to the speed it's processed. Subvocalization is one of the things the brain does while it's bored, waiting for further input from the retina.

Speed readers might have have larger foveae and/or stronger eye muscles.

Note that I can read at greater than 4x normal listening speed, at which point audio becomes unintelligible, but I still sub-vocalize.

A possible solution might be auto-transliterating text into shorthand.

That's my hypothesis, yes. I think the limits are probably physical. I'm not sure if practice would help or cause fatigue.

Also, I remember reading a blog post by an aspie who thought she was consuming more information than she could process, which was causing dizzyness and nausea.

Get split brain surgery (Corpus Callosotomy). Try reading aloud with left eye closed. This should be fairly easy since your left hemisphere should be in charge of language development. Then try reading aloud with your right eye closed. This will most likely be impossible since your right hemisphere has no way of processing language. Here's the hard part - teach yourself to read aloud with your right eye closed. Very difficult, but not impossible. Once you've mastered that, you'll be able to read and comprehend both pages of a book simultaneously.
Possible side effects - alien hand syndrome.
