Why is our moon so yuge?
>>
>>8016310
it's not yuge. it's american. it's fat.
>>
Make the moon great again
>>
we built it that way
>>
>>8016310
Because a planet the size of mars collided with Earth and the spin off material formed a giant accretion disk which coalesced into a fuck huge moon

this, also the moon is the faggiest planet ever.
>>
>>8016310
Better ask yourself, what is the probability of the only moon of a habitable planet having an angular size that is basically exactly the same as the angular size of the system's star (making total eclipses with a visible corona possible).
>>
so it can eclipse the sun

also the amplitude of tides in our oceans is probably the reason why we exist (and one of the hundreds of reasons why aliens similar to us don't exist)

This

The moon is the less-dense matter from the two planets ejected into space from the collision

Also, the moon is in fact a dark grey-black color like charcoal, but looks pale due to it being set against the darkness of space
>we wuz moons and sheeit
>>
>>8016555
Life evolved at geothermal vents, sorry. If you're going by a circadian argument that our evolution was affected massively by the tides, you should check your facts again. Tidal forces are just one effect.
>>
>>8016563
noticed that too.

can't get over how much that canyon on Charon reminds me of vallis marineris.
>>
>>8016617

I'm just saying that some fish learned to walk on a beach and went on becoming our ancestor; tides helped in this process, also by shaping the coastlines or creating places like Mont Saint-Michel.

I wouldn't be surprised if 99% of aliens are just dumb fishes.

the moon also gives us a magnetosphere, which shields us from lots of radiation.

That also makes Earth the densest planet in the solar system

its literally got the core material of two worlds

Ganymede is huge but is comprised of a lot of frozen volatiles
If it was closer to the sun all that would evaporate away

luna is solid rock no gay ass frozen ices
>>
>>8016638
>tides helped in this process
We don't know that at all. For all you know the shifting of the tides made it harder for fish to grow proper fin muscles. We might have been set back millions of years because the waters were crashing around haphazardly from the tide.
>>
>>8016638

the more I think about tides...

>shallow coral reefs form some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral_reef

thank you based Moon
>>
>>8016705
For all you know, that would have created a race of superfish that would crawl out of the ocean and eat our monkey ancestors to extinction.
>>
>>8016835
>crawl out of the ocean and
Go on...
>eat our monkey ancestors

Yeah I don't think you've grasped evolution yet.

Should astronomy officially and fully abandon the vernacular names "Sun", "Earth", "Moon", and replace them with "Sol", "Gaia", "Luna"?
>>
>>8018046
Yes. The sooner we do away with the obdurate vernacular, the better.
>>
>>8016310
because anything that is solid had enough attraction to the sun to not get solar winded far away. hence why GAS giants are further away from rocky planets

>>8018049
>>8018046
They were named that way in the Greek and Roman ages of civilization
They didn't remain that way for a reason... two out of the three symbolize faggotry, for instance
>>
>>8016310
Does callisto really look like that?
>>
>>8018058
>two out of the three symbolize faggotry
Oh do they? Which ones? Don't tell me "Gaia symbolizes faggotry" because of moronic and childish connotations like >>8017503's.
>>
>>8017095

somehow I doubt this was the video you meant to post.

i wish our moon had a cool name instead of just being "moon"
>>
>>8018058
>because anything that is solid had enough attraction to the sun to not get solar winded far away. hence why GAS giants are further away from rocky planets

this is total and utter bullshit
Kepler telescope has shown us that other systems have jupiter like planets orbiting right in front of their host stars. they call them "hot jupiters"
>>
>>8018277

Not only that but also that they are far more common than our Jupiter
They heavy elements are usually even further away.
It's weird if you think about it.
In our system we have
Sun - four rock planets - gas giants - rest of rock

For most other system it's more like
star - gas giants - rock
>>
>>8017224

>>
>>8018283
>For most other system it's more like

To be fair, the methods we use to find exoplanets make it easier to find close-orbiting gas giants than anything else.

Such systems wouldn't be habitable though. Our rock planet needs to be in the inner part of the system to be in the habitable zone, and fatass planets like Jupiter need to be outside to protect us with its gravity field from shit flying towards the inner Solar System.
>>
>>8018046
Either Sol, Terra and Luna or Helios, Gaia and Selene. Don't mix please. And since the rest of the system is roman, so should these. Does that mean though that Pluto should be Des Pater?

moon is a cool name, you dunce, its just that calling all other natural satellites 'moons' makes it sound silly

imagine if we just called planets 'other earths'. it would make earth sound silly
>>
>>8016310
if Pluto is not a planet then how is Charon considered a moon?

I thought by definition moons must orbit planets

>>8019509

Pluto/Charon is technically a double planet since they orbit a common barycenter
>>
>>8019515
i prefer the term 'binary planet'.

also due to the Moon slowly migrating away from us, in a few hundred million years the centre of mass in the Earth-Moon system will lie outside the Earth, making it a binary planet.
>>
>>8016653
>That also makes Earth the densest planet in the solar system
>>8016658
>also explains why earth has such a large iron core

So how do you explain Venus' density of 5.2g/cm3?
>>
>>8016617
no it just adapted to geothermal vents later

it was the gentle day / night cycle that created life
>>
>>8019586
Venus also suffered a giant impact event but the collision wasn't a glancing blow, the collision nearly completely destroyed both worlds, and the reformed planet was locked in a super slow retrograde spin
>>
>>8019515
>Pluto/Charon is technically a double planet since they orbit a common barycenter
No.
>>
>>8019602

I'd completely forgotten about Venus' retrograde spin. Thanks.

Europa's Linae are believed to be from upturned minerals and other dissolved oceanic material that's been frozen into the moon's icy shell.
