You're correct. It's an abnormal sexual preference, but it's also one that is harmful children who are vulnerable and unable to consent. It's a detriment to others and society, so a pedophile has to get over it with therapy or resisting the urge to act upon it, including acquiring child pornography which perpetuates child exploitation.

I think that it is a symptom of not being prepared for adulthood due to trauma or emotional neglect leading to developmental milestones not being met.
They are children mentally but but with the sexual development of an adult.
They need talk therapy to get through feelings of loss about their childhoods and move on to make the most out of their adult lives. Hopefully attraction to adults will follow.

There's several other factors at play here. Guys attracted to women can legally satisfy their urges. On the other hand, pedos can't, and not only that they are pretty much the most stigmatized sexual group out there which can encourage anti-social behaviour. If everyone treats them like monsters, maybe that will be reflected in how they act. You can easily serve half your life in jail in the US for mere possession of cp, despite serving less time for actually molesting the kids. I think this harsh sentencing might actually encourage more pedophiles to act out on their urges than if the punishments were lower.

But numerous case studies with therapists working with pedophiles have suggested that access to stimulation such as child pornography does NOT make fantasies of molesting real children go away - it intensifies them. The documentary has really good points. Why is teen sex the most searched porn? Why are all fashion models young?
