As long as you have no criminal record, 3+ years of full-time work experience, and are physically fit and have good vision (including color-vision), then you should have no problem getting on with a police department if you apply to at least a few of them.
>>
>>7994962
>no criminal record
Done with 2nd year of uni in a month. Non-issue.
>3+ years of full-time work experience
Maybe I could start out as an assistant or internship? Everyone has to start somewhere.
>physically fit
Despite not being able to exercise much, running from place to place on campus is a good weekday workout. Plus I treadmill when I have the energy to.
>good vision
>tfw left eye is -8, right eye is -7
Glasses are heavy on the prescription, but my vision with glasses is better than most people without.
>including color-vision
Non-issue

Anything else?
>>
>>7994970

Vision should be okay, I think the cutoff is 20/40 when corrected with lenses. For physical fitness aim for at the slowest a 16-minute two-mile> And start doing push-ups and sit-ups every single day. You want at least 60 push-ups in a two-minute window without dropping to your legs, and at least 70 sit-ups.

For work experience, it doesn't matter as long as it's paid experience with no gaps in employment. Working retail is acceptable as long as you're 30+ hours a week. (say 32-40 on your applications). Don't do anything unpaid with ONE exception. If you have time on top of school and work, get your CPR and EMT certifications, and volunteer with a local rescue squad.

All of the above will help you. I'm a firefighter now, but also applied with city police departments and State Police.

Probably the most retarded post I've read on this board.

I've only been here a day though, so I'm really looking forward to what /sci/ has to offer.

Maybe you should've gotten your degree from a community college. Then you'd know you don't get a degree in math to 'do math' unless you want to be a math researcher.

I didn't get my job because of my math degree, I got it from my experience doing EMS as a hobby.

Not even mad though, I love my job. $54k a year working 10 days a month.

I said Forensic Sci. I mean working on evidence at the lab or something like that. Do I need a CPR and EMT certification for that?
And as for fitness, I'm more of a runner than a lifter, honestly.
And uni classes eat all my time right now, and I bet they'll keep eating my time. I can work only about 2-4 hours a week, because classes.

>>7995003
>microbiology
>>
>>7995015

You aren't going to get a job working with evidence or in a lab without actual law enforcement experience. CPR and EMT helps you get that law enforcement experience.

Don't care if you're more of a runner, work on push-ups. Police academy will have you doing those daily.

>work 2-4 hours a week

INTO THE TRASH HE GOES!

Lack of work experience is the #1 reason these "college graduates" have such trouble finding jobs that pay more than $10 an hour.
>>
>>7995026
I'll keep CPR and EMT in mind. Push-ups too.
>INTO THE TRASH HE GOES!
I lack work experience now because of my classes taking up time. I'll see about internships that might help me get that experience I need.

Thanks anyway, firefighter anon.

Pure math undergrad
Pure math Master's.. Took a year-long sequence in graduate level statistics, some machine learning, and a few other applied courses.. Got a job as a RND analyst at an insurance company. I'm starting at 100k in an area with a very low cost of living..

Don't be an idiot; math alone is absolutely useless in the real world.. Learn how to apply to things that people value, like making money, and it's a gold-mine.

S = Science
T = Technolohgy
E = Engineering
M = Mathematics

What's the difference between technology and engineering?
Technology is the result of engineering. Technology does not deserve the place it has on the acronym STEM.

The practitioners of technology are your grandmother to your maid who operate a smartphone, or your cab driver who operates a car.

I have witnessed plenty of fights between the Physicists, Engineers and Mathematicians, but I am yet to witness a fight between S,E and M with "technologists".
>>
>>7995266
I think technology is the section that keeps the machines and instruments running
The technologists, technicians, CAD monkeys etc
>>
>>7995275
Technicians + CAD monkeys + Software developers are all part of engineering. I find it extremely hard to draw a line between technology and engineering.
>>
>>7995285
They aren't.
Its like comparing accountants to mathematicians
The guy who repairs the NMR to the chemist.
>>
I saw a new cringe-worthy acronym in a news article the other day about education. It was STEAM. They added "arts" in the middle. Almost spit up my coffee anon. What do? Is America fucked or what?
>>
>>7995291
Accountants are fitted between two or more fields.
Business + Math.

Technologists on the other hand live in the Engineering ecosystem.

First Google search anon, top hit, page 1.

STEM is an acronym for the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Discussion of STEM-related programs has become a presidential priority because too few college students are pursuing degrees in these fields
