I don't know what you mean by significance in the real world, but I doubt a scientist's contributions are any less significant than those of most other professions. What's the significance achieved by driving trucks/pushing money around/selling trinkets? In a wide enough perspective it's all so insignificant anyway that you might as well do what you like.

My childhood dreams included a wife and a cat, and a small cozy house near a train station. And it's coming true next tuesday as we're finally getting the cat. Two cats, actually.
