I've recently gotten into quadcopter (drone) racing. I find the math that goes into the flight control of them fascinating. It would be impossible to fly them without computer assistance.

It's all based on PID loop controls but there are many variations to chose from. Whenever you change the configuration of your copter you need to spend quite a bit of time, sometimes over an hour re-tuning the PID settings of the copter to account for the new physics of your setup.

Pic related. My copter after a crash. I'm really digging the unbreakable blades. You just bend them straight and fly again. Eventually they get so chewed up you need new ones but it sure beats replacing them every single time you crash.

You can get a very nice setup for $1000. I spent closer to $2000 for mine.
$500 for the FPV (first person view) goggles. They are like VR goggles and you see what the camera on the nose of the copter sees. It's pretty grainy video. That video I posted is from a gopro camera that is also strapped on the copter. The raw video you see in real time is much lower resolution. It looks like a worn out VHS tape. You can get cheaper goggles for $250 or so, I bought the top of the line ones.
Controller was about $200. You can get cheaper ones but the Taranis is pretty much the standard right now.
Copter itself is about $400 or so.
$130 for the carbon fiber frame
$15-30 per motor (60 to 120 total)
$15 per motor speed controller
The camera, video transmitter, radio receiver, flight controller etc. make up the rest of the cost.
Batteries are about $25-50 each. You will need at least 8 in my opinion. I have 10 and will probably get a few more.
My battery charger was about $200
You can build one for cheaper, mine is about as good as you can get.
Then there are all the little things. I bought a nice soldering station for $100, lots of new tools, a workbench etc.
It's addictive. I was a pretty avid gamer before I picked up the hobby and now I have hardly touched a video game in months. I spend my time tuning the flight controller of the copter, working on it, or flying it.

I've crashed the frame in that picture 100+ times. Many at over 50 mph. The other day the power to my video connection came lose at probbaly 50 mph and 100 feet in the air. I heard the thump when it hit the ground. All it needed was a new buzzer speaker for the beeper onboard that tells me when the battery voltage is getting low. It's also recommended to have a beeper speaker so you can activate it if you crash in tall grass/bushes.

I've been astounded by the strength of the carbon fiber. But this is a top of the line frame. You can get cheap chinese frames for 1/3 the cost that use inferior carbon fiber. Some even use fiberglass with a carbon fiber veneer on both sides so it just looks like it is carbon fiber.

You get what you pay for.
