I'm not quite sure, but it seems to be used for small samples in distillation and/or rotary evaporation.

pear-shaped flasks are more stable in ring-mounts, i'm pretty sure

The different shapes of glassware is to more easily differentiate between health, stamina and mana potions.

The only tools that are remotely phallic would be #1 and #2. The reason everything is round is because it's easier than if it had sharp edges. It mixes better/more homogeneously, nothing gets stuck in edges, etc.
