Why dont function definitions such as f(x,y) = xy use := instead

it's unfortunate that mathematics has chosen to use

= to denote two quantities having the same value
= to denote an assignment operator
= to denote the output of an operation

fortunately context usually clarifies such ambiguities

because it doesn't make sense to use that to define a function.
Use something like this instead, which is standard notation:

f: RxR -> R
(x,y) l-> xy
