Jokes are things that denote and create humor on their own. Memes are memetic pieces of culture that propagate - they can be jokes, but don't have to be.

The thing about this though, is that the famous 'why did the chicken cross the road' thing IS a meme. It's a cultural 'not-joke' thing that we tell people - it's only funny because of that implied knowledge, and wouldn't work if you weren't already familiar with it.

Except, OTHER versions of this meme, like "why did the lawyer cross the road? Because he saw a car accident on the other side." are actually jokes, because they play with our expectations to create humor. This joke is a meme, and memes about this meme are actually jokes.

Why would they all tell that joke simultaneously? It only takes one person to tell a joke to a crowd. If they go on to tell the joke outside of class, that's a different matter entirely. For that case, you'd need proper memetics which only really exist in virology.
