Calling all A level fags.
Just wondering how this compares to A level. It is from the second lowest OU maths course.

There are 3 other textbooks that cover calculus (diff and integ), further trig, matrices, vectors, and some other stuff.

I am going to post the indexes from the last book.

Thanks.

The majority of this stuff is covered in A levels, but a lot is in further maths. The only thing I'm not sure about is trigonometric identities from de moivre's and euler's formula.
>>
>>7940594

What do you mean by further maths? Uni stuff?
>>
>>7940617
During A levels you have the option to take further maths. This is when you take additional modules on top of the original 6 (C1 - C4, S1 and M1)
Further maths counts as an additional A level, alongside maths.
>>
>>7940617
we have (at least edexcel has) 18 math modules:
C1,2,3,4 (Core Maths)
FP1,2,3 (Futher Pure Maths)
M1,2,3,4,5 (Mechanics)
S1,2,3,4 (Statistic)
D1,2 (Decision Maths)

there are four possible a levels using these modules:
Mathematics (all modules from c and two from m,d,s)
Further Mathematics [if also doing mathematics] (fp1 and four other modules including either fp2 or fp3 and not including any modules from the Mathematics A level)
Further Addition Mathematics [if doing Mathematics and Further Maths] (the rest of the modules)
Pure Mathematics (all c modules, fp1 and fp2/3)

hence when he says "The majority of this stuff is covered in A levels, but a lot is in further maths." he means its in fp1,2,3 and not the core mathematics c1,2,3,4 or the applied maths (m,d,s)

p.s. people normally only do mathematics and sometimes maths and further maths. pure maths and futher addition maths are from autism.
>>
>>7940654
>pure maths and futher addition maths are from autism.

kek.
>>
>>7940654

If I finish up with good grades, how would I fare in an eng undergrad degree (like mech e)?
>>
>>7940667
Quite well.
Some places might need you to take an addition entrance exam, though it's unlikely.
good luck.

p.s.: about 60% of maths+further maths students get an A*/A by the end of their course. The most challenging A level you'll need to take for mech eng (and this is the case for almost everyone) is Physics.
>>
>>7941169

This course actually covers a lot of physics (despite being a maths course). Regardless I'll be applying for a foundation year at a brick uni.

The unis I have spoken to want an 80% average on this course.
>>
>>7940654
You realise that all of the modules are easy right? The only "difficult" modules are M4 and M5 since they resemble STEP questions.
D2 can also be viewed as "difficult" since it's mindnumbingly long and boring.
>>
>>7941317

Less than 10% get A grades, which suggests it is difficult. Using yourself as an achor to determine whether something is difficult is dumb. Not everyone is a super genius like you, with many grand accomplishments to your name.
>>
>>7941339
I wasn't aware of those statistics. Then objectively, what was hard about a specific module of your choosing then? Because really, the official Edexcel textbooks on these were fantastic to self teach from.
>>
>>7941344

I'm not talking about me specifically. A level maths is difficult, or at least challenging for most people.
>>
>>7941348
If you're able to pass GCSE maths then you're perfectly capable of getting an A* in the A-Level exams given that you have actually for it. You need so little understanding for the exams that it's disgusting, learning by rote is enough to get you 95%+
>>
>>7941351

Either you're overestimating what the average person can do or I'm underestimating. The stats support my view, though. And we have results going back decades.
>>
>>7941401
Aren't the end results tweaked anyway so that a certain amount achieves a certain grade?
>>
>>7941348
>A level maths is difficult
what the actual fuck
>>
>>7941408
>>7941408

From AQA last year

16.5% got A* in maths
3.5% got A* in pure maths
17% got A* in further

Clearly it is hard for a lot of people.

I do agree that literally anyone can do A level maths if they put in enough time
>>
>>7941466
Too many stupid people doing it then.
>>
>>7940594
Euler's formula is in FM, I did it just a few weeks ago. It's in the Complex Numbers chapter of FP2
>>
>>7941475

>I'M A GENIUS
>>
>>7941469

Why didn't you put enough time into it?
>>
>>7941484
Said no one. A-Level maths is just learning by rote, which any idiot can do.
>>
>>7941496
except not any idiot can do it, otherwise everyone would get 100%.

just have some fucking modesty for once in your life
>>
I would say that Mst 124 essential mathematics 1 (the course this textbook is from) is harder than A levels, simply due to the fact it's done in 7 months, while A levels are done over 2 years. Material wise they're both very similar.
>>
>>7941489

Fucked around in year 12 failed all my january exams went to resit in summer did shit in those too but better in maths kinda (went from a U to a C in C1) instead of doing the smart thing and resitting the year (and changing some of my subjects) I decided to carry on with Maths, Chem, Bio and Physics. In year 13 there were no exams in january so I had 13 exams roll over into the summer which was way too much to prepare for;my shitty work ethic didn't and I choked. Loved Maths to bits though, class wise it was super fun and interesting, I just choked in exams.

I think also relied too much on examsolutions instead of working through the textbook
>>
>>7941504
The lack of 100% comes from:
- stupid mistakes
- not being able to the rare questions which can't be done by rote
You need to get A-Level maths off your pedestal because it's nothing amazing.
>>
>>7941506

Forgot to add this.

t.someone that has done both.
>>
>>7941506
What? The shown page is doable in 2 weeks at most.
>>
>>7941510
I knew someone who got to the 3rd round of the BMO and he didn't do very well in his A levels. Amazingly smart guy however, managed to get a grade 2 in STEP I without knowing C3/C4.
>>
>>7941524
Isn't BMO just 2 rounds and then IMO?
>>
>>7941524
>yfw you realise that you can pay your way through the BMOs
>>
>>7941526
IMO then. Anyway he passed the 2nd round. Also don't listen to the other guy, your grade depends heavily on where you're taught; where I went (not a private school, but a decent public school) about 80-90% of people get As or A*s in maths and something like 50% got an A in further maths, maybe more... most people drop further maths however if they don't do well in their AS.

>>7941536
He's not the kind of person to do that.
>>
>>7941518

Do you have any reading comprehension? The three pages OP has posted are NOT the entire course. They are from 1 textbook. And you're not going to cover over 250 pages worth of material in 2 weeks, don't be childish.

The entire course is over 1000 pages worth of material, covering pretty much the entirety of A levels in around 7 months.

The final exam and the assignment questions are also a bit more rigorous than A levels, at least compared to what I studied in the mid 2000s.
>>
>>7941543
>not posting the full contents but talking about it
how to compare
>>
>>7941543
In these 1000+ pages, what gets covered?
>>
>>7941558
>>7941546

Most of the AS/A2 curriculum, minus S and D.
Algebra, functions, trig, coordinate geometry, vectors, differentiation, diff methods, integration, integration methods, matrices, and what's in the pics above.

There's also some inclusion of AS/A2 physics, specifically in the calc and vectors sections.
>>
>>7941595
>it takes 2 years to do those things
Since when? Are people incapable of self teaching?
And why did you do both your thing and A-Levels?
>>
>>7941496

Spotted the distinguished mathematics professor.
>>
>>7941654
Spotted the procrastinating student that makes up excuses for failing.
>>
>>7941757

Yeah even though I got a shitty grade in maths I still blame myself for my grade. I do wonder if a different combination of subjects would have helped. But I enjoyed maths so much I would do it over again if that was possible. Gotta work hard from day 1 and do as many problems as possible. Those skills translate extremely well into Uni to.
>>
I was graded a U the first time I took CM1 with AQA but then 2 years later I think I was just shy of a B in CM4. now I like to watch videos on tensor calculus for fun. Looking back, I am pretty sure that I had an attention disorder for most of my adolescent life.

Hard work will always reward you, but the important thing is to understand rather than repeat mock exams and hope for the best. I'll be starting classes in a RG uni this September after putting in "real" hard work this last year.

>>7941540

>your grade depends heavily on where you're taught; where I went (not a private school, but a decent public school) about 80-90% of people get As or A*s in maths and something like 50% got an A in further maths

Very likely, for example the A level colleges that are in cities are usually right next to universities like birmingham, manchester and liverpool etc and as such they are gearing their students to go right into the institution next door to them. They even sometimes have university students in foundation years doing classes at the colleges. The idea of where you are going to go really is decided heavily on your location.

My college peddled off further maths as something that the 1-2 smartest kids in the class should maybe consider.
>>
>>7941540
>your grade depends heavily on where you're taught
I went to a shit tier school, attended no classes and came out with A*A*A*A.

What course at Warwick? Is the place as good as they say? Im not applying there (Want to do Theoretical physics, but in Lower sixth my mum fell ill and ended up with ABCC grades so I can only aim for ~Top 30 unis), but all of mathfag friends are going there for maths.

Look on ebay and buy them. There are 4 books in total (A, B, C, D). Sometimes people sell all 4.
