Anyone know any good books or online resources on the brain?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I'm not an expert by any mean on this, but I've seen some interesting TED talks on the subject, like it's ability to grow back neurons and stuff. 'Was really interesting!

There are some resources but none of them is scientific. Neuroscience has yet to become a rigorous science. Currently it is still infested with a lot of philosophical mumbo jumbo and blinded by ideological dogma.

P.S. It's heavy.

Not really; though it's close to a thousand pages long. Book's fucking monstrous.

Biology textbooks are somewhat close

Neuroscience texts include:
Purves - Neuroscience 5th edition
Kandel - Principles of Neural Science 5th edition
Netters concise neuroanatomy (mostly just diagrams and labels, very good quality though)
Synapses - Maxwell, Sudhof, Cowan

If you want to discuss brain science more, I study biomedical science, with a specialisation on neuroscience, I hang around on the /sci/ discord chat, so you can find me there.

Maxwell, Sudhof and Stevens
I always get the authors names mixed up

What's wrong with TED? Knowing 4chan it wouldn't surprise me if some kind of meme was build around it, but seriously, why would you bitch about daily talks given by professionnals from all around the world?

A significant amount of the brain science related parts are dumbed down considerably for the layperson audience. In which case, just reading wikipedia, or a journal review, is better than a TED talk.

Let me give you an example.
I just watched this video:
https://www.ted.com/talks/david_anderson_your_brain_is_more_than_a_bag_of_chemicals?language=en#t-67359

I could summarise what he said very quickly for a non-layperson.

"ADHD is a mental disorder characterised by hyperactivity and learning deficits. In this study we looked at whether drosophila exhibit characteristics similar to ADHD, and whether these characteristics were affected by genotype as is seen in ADHD.

We looked at dopamine receptor genetic variants in drosophila to determine whether loss-of-function mutants affected activity in response to stimuli (air puffs; differing in intensity and number), as well as their ability to learn (by using negative stimuli coupled with odours, then quantitatively measuring the response of control and mutant drosophila to the odour). Mutants showed deficits in learning, as well as prolonged "agitation" in response to "puff" stimuli.

We then tested whether these deficits were caused by different mechanisms, by selectively replacing loss-of-function mutations with control variants in neuronal subtypes. We found that in the central complex, dopamine receptors mediate hyperactivity, but not learning deficits. However, in the mushroom body, we found the opposite; learning deficits were mediated by dopamine receptors, but not hyperactivity"

There you go, you read that in a minute or two. It saves you from watching a 15 minute video. The important part of the video is only the last 5 minutes really.

If you have to watch even half of a video repeating basics every time you watch a TED video targeted at laypeople, you're going to waste a lot of time.

Why would mathematical geniuses such as myself waste my time studying biological mumbo jumbo.

Give me the basics doc, I have only 15 minutes to spare and I'm not going to google every technical word you use, increasing the amount of time I spend trying to understand your point to more than 15 minutes.

Retard.

Some TED talks can be good. TEDx is plague cancer. It'll make your dick fall off, then it rots your brain and infects your loved ones.

Avoid TEDx.
