He's a practical guy and basically said lab coats were implemented to protect people's clothes. Most scientists wore dress clothes, which would have protected them from most things.

I wear a labcoat at work as an industrial mechanic, because the pockets have so much room and it keeps oil and bullshit off my skin and it's also so much classier than coveralls.

CS grad student here. I do all of my work either in my pajamas or in the nude. More comfy that way.

I've only had to wear a coat for microbiology and am kinda sad because of that. I at least thought it would be required for ochem labs but nope.
