If I were shining a UV LED onto a metal, I would get a certain amount of electron scattering due to the photoelectric effect. Is there a way, without changing the light or the metal, to increase the amount of electrons released from the metal?
>>
Rub the metal with cotton to static some extra electrons out.
>>
Does changing intensity of the light count?
>>
>>7855385
No. It has to be the same LED at the same amplitude.
>>
>>7855380
While this did work for one trial, I'm looking for a solution wherein the LED could continually scatter more electrons from the metal.
>>
We are working with beryllium, by the way.
>>
Is there any way to do this?
>>
If we light the metal for a long time would it release all of its electrons?
>>
>>7855399
If you don't change anything about the experiment, how the hell do you expect the results to change?
>>
>>7855350
heat the metal up?
>>
>>7855433
Yes. But we're looking for a way to increase the electrons released per second.
>>
>>7855441
The light and the metal can't change. However, components within the experiment can be added.
>>
>>7855442
That's an interesting thought, but long-term exposure would ruin the sensor.
>>
>>7855445
But all, every single one, or just the valence ones? If former, wouldn't that mean all metal should fall apart from sunlight?
>>
>>7855350
i was wikipediaing and i don't know but can u use a photomultiplier to make more photons?
>>
>>7855458
The valence ones, obv.
>>
>>7855350
Run a current through the metal?
Play with the amps and voltages for effect.
>>
>>7855442
Cool it way down?
>>
>>7855525
The idea is to scatter the electrons via the light.
>>
>>7855565
Nope. It has to happen at room temperature.
>>
>>7855592
shake it vigorously?
>>
>>7855649
Kek
>>
ITT: how do i conduct experiments with no variables..
>>
>>7855350
The electrons liberated is dependent on
>photon energy
>temperature
>work function of the material
>Number of photons
Excluding unusual cases each photon will liberate one electron or zero electrons
The higher the energy of the photon until it reaches the work function the more often this happens

If you can't increase the energy per photon then increase the temperature of the metal
If you can increase the number of photons
A photomultiplier is not something you should consider
If you can use a different metal use something with a low work function like sodium potassium or if that's to reactive cerium

I would be very interested to know the objective of the experiment
