I read an article on this. So they did a study and determined all of the geoengineering schemes proposed to deal with global warming would be hideously expensive and be totally worthless or would actually make the climate worse. Like irrigating the deserts to create forests on them to sequester carbon could cause the oceans to die and other areas of the world to turn to desert, because there is no more dust being blown off the desert and into the oceans for micro-nutrients and air to form raindrops.

The conclusion was only halting carbon emissions entirely would avert global warming trends.

Iron fertilization of the oceans would cause deoxygenation and kill everything in it other than algae.

Carbon sequestration in the ocean would cost trillions, also kill everything in the ocean.

Carbon sequestration on land would cost even more and the infrastructure and investment to do so would take decades to ramp up and it wouldn't even offset anything enough to matter, it could also just make it worse since more petrochemicals would be burned in the logistics of the whole endeavor then it would sequester.

So yeah, the options are to go Ted Kaczynski and totally dismantle industrial society, or accept that nothing can be done and accept the consequences.

Probably, yeah, but this is all hypothetical. They could work out a society where vaccines and limited forms of technology exist still. But keeping the population down is the whole point.

You ever read ol' Ted's manifesto? It's really good. The guy was an objective genius. Nomatter your philosophical viewpoint or politics, it's worth a read, at the least to understand how an argument to dismantle industrial society is compelling even without an existential threat like global warming.

Anyways, in real life, we will never give up our industrial society. Impossible. Best bet is to keep driving your fat-ass truck to work and maybe we'll figure it out or survive somehow. It's literally the only option.
