Why do fractions exist at all.. It seems pointless and confusing.

It's much easier for me to think of 1/12 as just 0.1 in a 12 digit notation.

multiply 1/12 by 4/12.. ok 0.1 x 0.4 in 12 digit notation.

no need for learning stupid tricks like multiplying by the reciprocal etc that just avoid explaining the actual concept.

Am I missing something / am I autistic?
>>
it can even be scaled up to more complex problems as long as you remember that you're in x notation and convert back to decimal notation at the end. Am I wrong?
>>
>>7770149
Please do not post on this board again
>>
>>7770149
So you are implying that is also easier for you to think of 0.5 as 0.1 in 5 digit notation?

So If you have say,
0.57371 that is 0.1 is 57371 digit notation?

I think you are autistic? Are you implying that every fraction we do should instead with replaced 0.1 and a explanation for what the base is?

That is fucking autistic. Working in a single base is better and easier to learn and to work with.
>>
>>7770156
>Working in a single base is better and easier to learn and to work with.
Only because that's what you've been doing or 20 years.
>>
thinking about represent numbers as ratios or fraction came first historically. of course its easier to think about numbers in decimal notation but that didn't come til way later.

personally pi makes more sense as a decimal. but i like thinking about 1/3 rather than .3333333....
>>
>>7770156
0.5 is 5/10.. that's still decimal notation.
0.57471 is 5.7471/10..
>>
>>7770173
or just .1 in base 3 also easy to remember
>>
and honestly while we're on the subject of base numbers thinking in base 12 would be a lot better anyway. way more factors.
>>
>>7770149
You're autistic.

Fractions are easy. You can visualize fractions. All a fraction is is a suspending of a final division step. It's not even like a mathematical tool someone came up with. It's impossible for us to do division without having something that could be considered a fraction.
>>
>>7770173
>of course its easier to think about numbers in decimal notation but that didn't come til way later.
Not really at all. I have no appreciation for 0.33333..., whereas with 1/3 I know exactly what I have. Ratio notation makes it clear what these numbers are: rational numbers formed by multiplying by a multiplicative inverse.

In fact, the concept of fractions can be generalized easily, which is one of the essential tools in modern algebra/geometry.
>>
>>7770197
division is a lie.. and thus fractions are a lie

no one visualizes division or fractions you just multiply by the inverse and get it over with.
>>
>>7770198
>I have no appreciation for 0.33333
That's because you're using the inferior base-10
>>
>>7770198
doesn't my following sentence agree with you? but i make the point the fractions or ratios cannot represent irrational numbers which is where decimals or algebraic symbol become useful.
>>
>>7770242
Decimals can't represent irrational numbers either. But yes, algebraic symbols are wonderful and should be used.
>>
>>7770238
why fight base 10? your life will expire before humanity stops using it
>>
dont you ever fucing say "why do fractions exist at all"

You're autistic OP but interesting thought nonetheless.
>>
>>7770149
1/3 * 1/4. How do you do that in your "easier" way?
>>
>>7772012
I suppose he'd change it in base 12
>>
>>7772017 was for >>7772015.

Ok, so in base 12 it's .4 * .3.

[math]\frac{5}{7} * \frac{9}{11} [/math]. He'd work in base 77. Then he'd have to multiply 5*11 and 9* 7 to get their representations .(55) and .(63) (base 77), (where by (55) we mean the single-digit representation of the decimal number 55 in base 77, etc) and then multiply .(55) * .(63) in base-77 to find the product of the two fractions base-77.

That's a whole lot fucking harder than just [math]\frac{5}{7} * \frac{9}{11} = \frac{45}{77}[/math]

OP, what the fuck were you thinking.
>>
>>7770149
what about 11/12?

or 71 / 487?

what's your thought process there OP
>>
>>7770149
You are fucking retarded
>>
>>7772055
.11 and .71.. are you dumb
>>
>>7774089
.11 in base 12 is [math]\frac{1}{12}+\frac{1}{12^2} \neq \frac{11}{12}[/math].

You should invent single-digit symbols for 11 and 71.

\nitpicking
>>
>>7770181

one hundredth of a third
>>
>>7770149
Fractions are a more direct and simple representation of what's actually happening. If you divide 17 by 27, you get [math]\frac{17}{27}[/math]. If you want to represent that in base 27 (which is a horrible idea), you're going to have to choose a symbol for 17, which I guess would be "H" if you use the common notation for bases larger than 10. Writing it as [math]{0.H}_{27}[/math] is pretty horrendous. Also, as this guy points out >>7772037 ... working with different denominators is far harder in base-whatever notation than it is to just write fractions. Oh well, I guess I got trolled.
>>
>>7772037
This is the answer.
Good job everyone. You were all great today :)
