>political science
If you become a well known politician. Otherwise you just look like you made a "I'm going to major in philosophy"-tier decision.

>math
Nope.

Learn this quick OP. The fastest way to a well paying job is to
>1) identify the jobs everyone says has a respectable salary
(these are usually STEM related but can be economics, etc)
>2) identify the one you are truly interested in
(this is much more difficult than people think. Interests change over time. I was lucky enough to choose a field as a naive undergrad that I enjoy. Not sure if it's exactly what I want though)
>3) be the best you possibly can be and work your ass off.
There are no jobs for people who just get a degree. There is no money for people who aren't interested/good at what they do. Work hard and demonstrate genuine interest and you can break into the field you want.

Petroleum Engineering

This. If you happen to get a job as a petroleum engineer, you're making large stacks.
>>
>>7745507

with a bs and avg starting pay

CS or SE. CE if you get a programming focused job. Computing Security is odd, either you get payed a ton or little.

at masters level these still get payed a ton, but at ms level the gap closes from other degrees

here's data from my own school

Going into chiropractic medicine, pay is pretty good considering, and my major isn't that tough, also I hear the grad school for chiropractors is definitely one of the more easy going grad schools.

Salary is pretty fucking good too, hoping I'll make six figures by my 30's.

ChemE here. I interned at AGIP, they couldn't find enough petroEs to fill the job slots. But the oil prices have crashed since then, so who knows.

>>

You should do science only for fun and interest, not for money. When you finished your degrees and perhaps have worked some Yeats in science, you nicht redecide. But then its all about your intellectual capabilities, and not your education, to pick a well paid job in the industry. In banking eg. you can Marke a fortune with knowledge on basic math, as most economists can not calculate and economy is not a science.
>>
If you pick a profession just for the paycheck, I wish you luck and a happy and healthy life.

I have found contentment in the pursuit of a field of science that I do not tire thinking about. A couple of times a week, for years, I've stopped to wonder about some facet of it. I'm not particularly gifted in the field but by the mere fact that I can continuously stay interested in it is enough of a reason to make it my career. I would suggest this to anyone.

This. I can't understand /sci/'s obsession with money and and dic... iq and diploma measuring contests.
>>
>>7745872
Not on life time earnings, no.
>>
>>7747077
What did you expect?

This a science and math forum where less than 10% have enough knowledge in science and math to create meaningless threads.

The rest are ashamed of even starting a science or math thread because they are likely to show that their math knowledge does not go beyond calculus I.

What does the 90% have left? Their STEM degree. That they can talk about. All day if you let them.

I'm making about $300K a year writing software. That's probably pretty far to the right of the bell curve though, so results may vary.
>>
>>7747096
300k sounds like a really comfy life. I think I could make a comfy one with 30-40k. Like, if I made my minimalistic dreams a reality. A tiny little bungalow or hobbit home.

Chemical engineering

But if you do STEM for money you're a meme and not really a STEM person

Who cares, it's not as if you are ever going to spend your disposable NEET bux anyway.

Everyone says to go in CS/SE/Codemonkey for the money, but how are you supposed to make >500k salary/base in your career without having your own (successful) startup? Sure, making low 6 figures still needs some brain, but the shitty career ceiling is really off-putting
>>
>>7747126
>how are you supposed to make >500k

What? What the hell? You'll be incredibly lucky to make 150+ in STEM intensive jobs. What are you people talking about?
>>
>>7747126
it's the same in any stem field.
>>
>>7747178
>go to a decent (doesn't have to be top 5) tech school
>major in math/cs/engineering and not jerk off on 4chan for all 4 years
>get internships and side projects
>if iq < 100: make <80k starting
>else: make >80-100k starting depending on iq
>make 200-300k in 2-10 years~ if you're somewhat focused on career and at [big 4 company]
The path to a middle/upper-middle class living is achievable by the common man, but a simple path still isn't an easy path..

Be honest: is medicine worth it for the money alone?

Once you factor in prestige, I'd say that being a physician edges out an engineer, but as far as money goes, I feel like unless you're a specialist or surgeon you're fucked.

So if you go into med school and only become a primary care physician, you are royally fucked.

I work over at a business incubator, basically where people go to start your own business, if you can manage to get a space and get research on something going, people will pay good money to see that research finished. Ex. The kinda stuff that says vaping is better for you than cigs
>>
>>7745507
STEM careers can pay well, but if you really want money finance is probably the most reliable way. IB guys generally get US$100K starting, US$200K after 3 years, US$500K after 5-7 years, and over a million 10+ years in (this is factoring in bonuses and all that). Hedge fund guys can pull in millions in a particularly good year. Top hedge fund managers can get paid billions, and mind you this is actual cash, not shitty shares and stock options.

Of course, the work is highly cyclical, and seeing as how M&A and capital markets activity has been in such a bubble recently, it's hard to believe that 2016 and beyond will bring good news to investment banking. Buy side guys have already had a pretty awful year with the crash in China and slowdown in emerging markets.

There is no good answer. Shit people get shit jobs in any field they pursue.

I have a friend of mine that did nothing but serve coffee after he graduated highschool. At 27 he owns 4 coffee shops and makes around 180.

On the other-hand I have college mates with internships at Merryl Lynch, and Morgan Stanly only making like 60 or 80 at age 30.

Not everyone "gets" their field. Find a field that you "get" and pursue the shit out of it. I personally do embedded and systems software. This is is also what I do in my free-time. Its also something I've found myself to have a natural knack for. I'm 25 and making 90. I know others in this field that are still at 50-60 after like 2-3 years on the job.
>>
>>7748490
this guy gets it, you can make money doing fucking anything if you're good at it. you just have to know how to monetise it. if you're good at cleaning toilets you can start a toilet cleaning company that cleans toilets better than anyone else and make bank cleaning toilets for everyone.
>>
>>7745507
on average doctors make good money but you need to figure in loan repayment. let's say you take out $300k in loans and go on PAYE. assume you specialize and do a 5 year residency making $55k/yr ($36k/yr net) and then make $300k/yr ($180k/yr net) as an attending. loan repayments are roughly $440k over 20 years plus a $30k tax bomb = $470k in loan repayments.
>>
>>7747322
>200 - 300k a year

You using rupees are currency?
>>
>>7748472
Keep in mind the number of hedge fund managers is in the low thousands. 2000 max.
>>
>>7745722
However an EE in the booming world of solar may make heavy stacks as well. Basically OP, get in the energy sector intelligentsia
>>
What field has potentially the max salary? Probably business or polisci, maybe even music, but you basically have to have a ton of luck, skill, and preparation to make bank in those fields. Otherwise, they're all actually mediocre.

What field has the highest average salary? Probably petroleum engineering, but you have to settle for living in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.

What field has the highest average RoI? Chemical engineering or medicine.

Which field can you go into and make bank regardless of the quality of your school? Engineering in general.
>>
>>7746792
And don't forget that a lot of medicine jobs end up being life consuming. As a doctor, you essentially work in 1 of 2 lifestyles:

1) you're a general practice sort of doctor, meaning that you work during everyone's free time

2) You're an emergency or specialty doctor, so you have to be ready whenever someone comes in

Either way, your social life ends up taking a hit. Medicine can be rewarding both personally and financially, but it's also life consuming.
>>
>>7747077
Because the people on /sci/ are either unemployed college grads trying to justify their degree, or high schoolers who aren't sure what to major in.
