Is there any reason preventing humans from living in a 80helium/20oxygen environment? The N2 is inert anyway, so...?
>>
what about 80% marijuana ??? xd
>>
>>7741487
Helium will evaporate quickly/float on top of the oxygen and leave you with a 100% oxygen layer, which will burn everything to a nice crisp the moment someone sneezes.
>>
>>7741487

Not really! In fact that mixture is called heliox. Look it up.
>>
>>7741627
this
there is a reason why there is almost no helium or hydrogen in the atmosphere
>>
>>7741487
Helium's expensive. That's the reason.

Humans actually *do* live in an 80% helium/oxygen mix environment: Specifically, the set of humans consisting of divers and medical patients with breathing troubles. Divers use it because under high pressure, nitrogen acts as an anesthetic, whereas helium doesn't do much at all. And it flows more easily than regular air, hence why it's used for breathing troubles.
>>
>>7741675
Only some divers use a non-air mix (and even they don't do it all the time). It's usually called nitrox and allows divers to dive for longer at shallower depths, but becomes useless as you go down past 80 ft.
>>
>>7741487
She is a big girl.
>>
>>7741771
Nitrox is a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, hence the name. The helium/oxygen mixture is heliox, although helium/nitrogen/oxygen "trimix" is most common.
>>
>>7741627
Gasses stay mostly mixed.
>>
>>7742526
Really? Huh, I guess that means smoke in a burning house should be generally safe to breath.

...wait a minute...
>>
Not enough gravity to hold the helium in the atmosphere. All helium would leave earth since it isnt regenerated by anything.
>>
>>7742526
Then why there is little or no Helium in air?
>>
>>7742591
Smoke isn't a gas, genius.

The problems of smoke inhalation are from the hot soot clogging alveoli and burning the tissues.

As well as suffocation from air depleted of oxygen via burning and displacement by c02 and other combustion products.
>>
>>7742595
>it isnt regenerated by anything.

That's not strictly true, since alpha decay creates helium, but it's clearly not generated faster than it bleeds from the atmosphere.
>>
>>7742526
gasses of similar masses stay mixed

He is a LOT lighter than O2

If gasses stayed mixed then why does CO2 drop straight to the ground and stay there?
>>
OP again. Since heliox is lighter than air and just as safe, could it be used for a blimp with livable space inside the envelope? At least hypothetically?
>>
>>7743328
Helium is flammable which would make it more noble to just stick with nitrous
>>
>>7743357
have you ever heard about hellium balloons?
>>
>>7741487
Obviously, everyone would have a squeaky voice and no-one would be able to take anyone else seriously, thus leading to the decline of society and the collapse of civilisation as we know it.
>>
>>7743504
Helium is not flammable.
Perhaps you meant hydrogen?
>>
>>7741665
Yes, it's not apart of God's design for us to breathe Helium, thus he designed the universe so Nitrogen would fall in place on Earth instead.

Except that He is so inert and the most ideal gas it escapes the Earth's gravitational field and goes into space
>>
>>7741665

Exactly. Hydrogen and helium in the atmosphere rise to the top and are lost into space. The amount of hydrogen and helium we lose daily is quite surprising.

Google and you can find the amounts we lose.
>>
>>7742599

It rises to the top and is lost into space.

I did a web search and the numbers I found are 95,000 tons of hydrogen and 1,600 tons of helium are lost to space yearly.

Forget oil and coal. In the future, we are reall going to be crippled by the amount of helium we are losing to the atmosphere. It is a very vital element for many purposes and we are dumping it into space.
>>
>>7743504

Very funny.
>>
>>7743357

Sure but everyone would sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks
>>
>>7743586
That's exactly what BSA is doing to boys in burger's (:D) and atmosphere. No girl is interested of babyface boys.
>>
>>7741487
>Is there any reason preventing humans from living in a 80helium/20oxygen environment?

Gravity.

Helium is the only element that has enough escape velocity to leave Earth's gravity well, and go into space.

Nitrogen doesn't.

And if we lived in an environment that had 80/20 Helium/Oxygen ratio, then you'd find very little plant growth. Regardless of biome.
>>
>>7741487
Is there any true behind that helium replaces oxygen in breath and blood? Or is breathing helium dangerous in any other way?
>>
>>7745772

Breathing helium could displace oxygen in the lungs, leading to asphyxiation.
>>
>>7745768
>Helium is the only element that has enough escape velocity to leave Earth's gravity well, and go into space

It's not the escape velocity but the very low mass. It floats up above the other gasses and escapes into space.

We lose even more hydrogen than we do helium.
