there is literally no reason to do something specialized like aerospace engineering in undergrad

imagine a similar situation: would you major in marine engineering for undergrad? It's just too specific and really should be a graduate level specialization

majoring in Mechanical engineering will give you the base level you need to continue to grad school in aero engineering. you can take classes relevant to what you are interested in pursuing (further classes in aerospace) and outside of school, its your job to make sure its very clear you want to continue on an aerospace track: join/start AeroSAE, intern with aerospace companies, do research with profs interested in aero/wave shit, etc
>>
>>7739209
Why does nobody talk about civil? Is it because people are scared that they may have to go outside sometimes for field work?
>>

Good luck 5 figuring with a physics Bachelor
>>
>>7739429
The fact that almost any job can get "five figures" shows how bad you are at math. My physics bachelor got me a 90k starting job at CERN. I'm working on my doctorate right now with no student debt. Have fun programming traffic lights.

He probably meant to say five zeroes, typical engineer.
>>
>>7739490

Maybe he was using base 16. Normally an engineer would consider different bases "autistic math nonsense" but binary and hex are used by electrical and computer engineers. The highest 16-bit number is 65535, so he's saying people with physics bachelors generally make less than that.

Is a double major of Bachelors of Engineering (Biomed) and Computer Science with honours a good idea?

I was initially going to just do CS, because I'm passionate about it, and want to be in IT Security, but I want to do engineering because i know it's going to give me real, general engineering skills (and validation to future employers and educational prospects). My wife has a Ph.D in Nutrition (bachelors double major in Medicine and English, masters in molecular biology). I want us to be a power couple.
>>
>>7740747
by the way, i don't care about salary right after graduation. i know that kind of thinking is just a meme.

I want to maybe create on or two cool things in my lifetime, but my main focus is to just enjoy my work, and have the freedom to research what I want.

How do people make over six figures with a Mechanical engineering degree? Most engineers I know don't make over 90k.
>>
>>7740961
You either have to be in the right place at the right time or put in the time at a larger company. Also being in the R&D or composites field helps a ton. Friend literally got offered a 150k job at 25 yrs old to be a composites engr
>>
>>7741014

I thought that salaries were higher at larger corporations like Boeing or Lockheed Martin. Although, I'd prefer R&D as opposed to some desk job at a larger corporation.

you dont generally get a physics bachelor and nothing else
because at the bachelor level its a less applied, more mathy version of engineering PLUS quantum mechanics

at grad level you learn really cool shit and research
you either get a phd and try for academia
or you get a masters and work in corporate research.

of course some people 'drop out' and do business consulting or programming (not codemonkey level)
>>
Why are engineers so autistic?
>>
>>7746122

Because beyond all your egotistical insecurities it's a worthless background degree on precisely the same level as biology, chemistry, psychology, English lit. and it will never be anything more.

Sorry to derail this thread with a selfish question but I don't know where else to ask-

I am looking for scholarship opportunities now that I have stopped hating myself; I am a Junior in Civil Engineering at a top five engineering school, also I am Hispanic and am currently above the summa cum laude graduation requirements. Sup, /sci/. I'm currently choosing between aerospace and mechanical and chemical engineering. I'm skilled at math and have always maintained a high GPA. Here's what I'm looking for in my decision...

>Which one requires more work?
I don't want to be stuck doing work 24/7, although engineering majors are notorious for their workload, I'm sure certain engineering disciplines require more work than others.

>Which one has the best job prospects and will bring me a good load of cash?
inb4 "But you shouldn't choose a major based on money!" Listen, the job market is tough right now. Money is an incentive for a lot of people out there. I don't want to major in something that's going to fuck me up. I enjoy science and math, but I'm also looking for money as well.

Just tell me which one you think is overall better.

>>
>>7750720

That's weird, EE and Biomed combined? Never heard of that. I know EE involves a shit ton of math, your best bet is probably software.
>>
Talk to your school's financial aid department. Also your professors. The former will have a large list of them, and the latter may know major specific sources of funding.

I have no idea how to exploit your Spichood, but you could see if there's some kind of Chicano/Hispanic club. They would definitely know. Check with financial aid about that as well.

Honestly financial aid should be your first choice.
>>
>>7750720
If you're babby at math then EE would be very very hard for you. Try the software eng.

The EE + Biomedical option sounds like the most interesting/applicable for getting rich degree though.
>>
>>7739272
I'm an EE major and pretty comfortable with it so far, though I've been contemplating the idea of getting a master's in biomedical engineering once I've got my bachelor's. What's supposedly wrong with biomedical engineering? Is it a universally bad field or just a bad choice for a bachelor's degree?

>>
>>7758153
shit country
>>
>>7758153
In countries like US with rampant grade inflation and kiddie undergrad degrees they can -get this- CHOOSE their own electives.

I'm not joking, they actually get to pick most of their classes, so they need have like 6 actual required classes to get for example a math degree and then you can pick easy bullshit classes to fill your credits.

Of course in a REAL degree you'd have a minimum of 40 hours per week of labs and classes so you wouldn't have time to pick random electives and "major" in other things. Then again if non grade inflated universities worked on the American system everyone would be a triple+ "major" and have a shitton of minors.
