So, what are the EE fags here doing? Which sub"genre" are you learning? Gonna go to university starting 2016 and need inspiration.

>Not being already inspired to do what you just signed up to do and haven't even started to do.

You a shit anon.

I do w6e in my free time, building stuff w/ MCUs, analog and so on. Just no idea what you do in the industry
>>
started EE a few months ago. so far just toying with arduinos and preparing for my DC analysis/mag. circuits exam
>>
Automation automation automation.
Process automation.
Building automation.
Power systems automation.
Industrial automation.

PLCs, SCADA, DDC, HMI and RTU.

Fuck humans, be your own factory.
>>
My EE program has the following specializations that determine what classes I take for the last year and a half.

Biomedical Instrumentation
Photonics
Sensors and Devices
Analog Circuits
Digital VLSI Circuits
Embedded Computing Systems
Electromagnetics
Signal Processing
Communications
Large Scale Power Systems
Sustainable Electric Energy
Power Electronics and Electric Drives
Controls

I really don't know what to choose. I want to work in industry for a while then specialize some more in a master where I hope I can study more advanced math. Which of these require more math and/or physics in grad school? I'm assuming embedded systems is the most employable, but is stuff like phonics and electromagnetic too niche? What do you think fellow EEs?
>>
>>7739397
controls and power are worth considering (unless you just hate those topics)
>>
>>7739397
If you can easily handle Fourier and Laplace transforms I'd recommend controls as well. Stability is a lot of fun and once you can put together the basics it's really simple to put models together with software to make shit work/ be stable
>>
My school only branches off into two "tracks" (electro physics or systems), which each have different specialties.

I'm leaning more towards the "systems" side, probably doing signal processing and control systems for specialties.
>>

Semiconductors. I find it fun and challenging because it lies at the confluence of many different disciplines (lots of materials science, physics, chemistry, and of course EE).
>>
>>7739400
I got the impression that power systems involved getting a PE, more paperwork, and bureaucratic and regulation related work than the others.

>>7739455
I haven't gotten to Fourier transforms, but I'm comfort with Laplace transforms and that sounds pretty fun. My ultimate concern is working a brain dead job where I don't use much, if any of what I learn in undergrad.
>>
Third year here probably gonna go to grad school. I find VLSI and semiconductor areas fairly interesting. Hoping to get an internship with TI or micron this summer but we'll see. I'll take what I can get as long as I get some sort of internship

Have you taken a look at Building Automation? - I find it quite fascinating and there is plenty of work in the field. You could be a controls engineer or controls project manager.
>>
>>7739561
I'm only in 2nd year so I don't know what it's like in the field but I do know that local power companies frequently hire students and recent grads
>>
just graduated

GET A GOOD GPA, GET A CO-OP

PAY ATTENTION, STOP FUCKING AROUND

UW? Just graduated from there fall 2014

Yep, what are you up to now?

I work in power on the gulf coast. I started in design, but at my company all engineers have to do a six month rotation in the field with our testing department. I switched to testing and commissioning after that. I commission sub stations, inspect relay logic, and make a lot of money, don't have a boss, and I earn overtime now.

It's a sweet gig. The guys that stayed in our engineering department are required to pick up their PE if they wish to advance at a certain point. I'm not certain about the automation guys and PEs but I don't think they care. Our automation guys are more like super techs than your typical engineer. They do spec and design stuff, but then put on hard hats and go out to job sites and get to see everything firsthand and tune the process. Our PID Instrumentation guys don't do jack shit. The plants out here (the petrochems at least) won't change their process EVER. The instrumentation manufacturers and DCS publishers make every device compatible with every existing system. So instrument guys just pull a twisted wire pair or fiber, land a new device, get an electrician to line out the motor, powersupply, and panel, and then the instrumentation engi comes back and lands the twisted wire pair or fiber. Everyone I know that pursued instrumentation in this geographic region is VERY well paid, but extremely bored and fat.
