Well there be mechanical engineering jobs in 2018? Will they still pay well?
Everyone's dropping out of the major left and right.

Because they're stupid and they thought MechE would mean being a mechanic.
>>
>>7702264
Don't know about you, but at my school MechEs average about 2 job offers by graduation. I know a dude working at a consultancy for $80k a year off the bat.

And this is coming from a dude who attends a relatively unknown state uni.

Honestly, the whole "STEM meme" isn't REALLY saying majoring in STEM is outdated, or bad. It's saying that people who think they're going to get 300k starting with a math degree are stupid. If you major in STEM, you'll most likely, if not, ever find a job. Now, there's a lot of people out there that believe they're going to be getting six figures straight out of college with an engineering degree. These people will become disillusioned and will fall into the whole "STEM meme." But, people on here treat STEM like it's dead.

Also >>7702413

Do you know anything about consulting? I heard that consulting = shitty work hours. IMO, 80k a year is great, but working long hours is one of my biggest fears.
>>
>>7702309
this, business is good too i guess, but you can get the same skill set by working your way up from the bottom. all other degree paths are basically just professional mcdonalds employees

>lelelelel job shortage is reel guise amirite xDDD???
>U.S. bureau of labor statistics show tht da jobzz growthz is small
>LOL STEMFAGS BTFO

Yeah, there's tons of STEM majors that are interdisciplinary, buddy. If you can get an internship in college, build a decent resume, you'll find a fucking job. Holy shit, it's not that hard. Even if it's out of your field, you can still get a decent pay, ask all of those MechE's that went on working at banks. A few guys I knew didn't have MBA's or anything.
>>
>>7702585
I think he's pointing out the awkwardness of that statement. Kinda poorly worded
>>
>>7702488
STEM is dead to /sci/, because while you'll likely find a job upon graduation, it won't be a STEM job.

You might as well have done an easier major like some shitty finance degree or IT if you weren't going to get to work in STEM anyway.
>>
>>7702855
STEM still works, it's just the fags who believe that Cs get degrees who aren't disadvantaged youths or women, and aren't handed a job.
Be intelligent, or bust your ass, or both. So internships, show you're worth more than that piece of paper handed out, and you'll get a job in your field, if it's not obscure.
>>
>>7702289
Nah, geotech is best.
>>
>>7702488
>300k starting
Memes aside, I don't get why people think they're going to get this with a STEM degree. That's what masters and phd econ students at good schools start at when they go into industry.
>>
>>7702914
nobody does. who the fuck doesn't know that's a meme? that 300k starting shit is fucking years old. the only meme is that guys think that they're going to get like 100K starting with their ME degree from poopystate university when in reality most guys graduating in engineering will get like 50K-70K starting, lower or greater depending on if you're from poopystate university or somewhere known for its engineering programs (has top 20 rankings for them)
>>
>>7702488
He did say something about shitty work hours, so there's that. Pretty sure that's typical for any consulting job really. At least you'll have food on your plate by the end of the day. And more than enough of it.
>>
>>7702929
Even MechEs from GT get on average 65k a year starting. To be fair GT is 'poopystate' but its also ranked #2 in mech.
>>
Speaking of jobs, junior MechE ugrad here. I've been trying to get an internship since freshman year with no luck. I've had to make do for the past two summers, first by working at some shitty energy startup doing "engineering" and the second summer working at my university's machine shop/diy place. I've gone to every career fair held by my university so far (not ivy, but at least top 50's) and I don't spill my spaghetti at interviews that much. Yet I've heard things like >>7702446 and see peers around me getting at least something at an engineering firm each summer, if not a full internship at GE or something. I don't mean to be callous, but I don't think they've been putting as much effort as me, either academically or in job search. What gives? I'm starting to panic here because I really need a job this time.

Practicing aerospace engineer here with a background in mechanical. The job prospects are great. All the batching about lack of jobs comes from retards who finished their STEM degree with a solid 2.1 and no internships or work experience and wonder why they can't find a job for 400k with benefits.

>>
>>7702264
If everyone is dropping it means there'll be less competition for your batch of graduates. Are you really that clueless?
>>
>>7703631
Or because it is a major that gets you no jobs and people are moving to other, useful majors.
>>
I hope the scene in the US is better than here. MechE undergrad from India. only 5 people in my class have gotten jobs. With barely 9k usd (converted from rupees)
Im going to be pursuing a masters degree in ME in the US. Is the job prospect better there after graduation?
>>
>>7704998
no
>>
>>7702345
MechE is being a mechanic. You do banal shit such as monitor water flow rates or maintain giant diesel engines. The only reason why they don't just use a community college taught mechanic is because ships and public works require higher standards of safety than car repair.

depends on where you work and what you do, jobs can be very different

I interned in manufacturing and then product design for two summers and wanted to shoot myself in the face, but then did a co-op at an R&D lab and it was incredible. doing a phd now, most of the people in the area I worked in that did the coolest stuff had one or an MS minimum. not necessarily true for all areas of ME, you just gotta find out what you're into and what you need to do to get there.

since nuclear and automotive engineering are specializations within MechE at my school I'm studying MechE, but desu I've been thinking about just dropping it and pursuing a Pharmacy major family, would be way easier probably, the major isn't competitive, and it'll pay the same, if not way more if I become a pharmacy major

nigga 3 years is such a short time away
markets dont change that fast
>>
>>7702929
your school ranking has nothing to do with it
your starting salary is mainly from where you move for work and what the cost of living is there
the engineer who went to poopystate on a full ride and makes 70k out the gate in flyover has way more purchasing power and can save at a much higher rate than the one who is making six figures in the bay area and has a fuckton of loans
>>
>>7710404
Decently to very impressed. That lasts for maybe 3 seconds, then you're just another person to them. Don't choose your major solely for the money. Learn what you'll be doing and what you want to do and how to get there.
>>
Guys is Biology good for careers, I heard it was shit
>>
>>7710969
No mechanical engineers do indeed do site work. What you say is true also however. Either way it's being a mechanic because those parts you draw are mere replacement parts for something that already exists. You will never create anything new.
>>
>>7704279
which will lead to a shortage shortly after you graduate
>>
>>7711756
adding to what this anon says, I've seen exactly that when I was co-op'ing in school as an ME. where all the crazy new stuff is cooked up is in R&D, but you might need a research degree to do that depending on what you concentrate in what ultimately what kind of role you want in that kind of work.
