I just sold off my book collection recently. 250 some odd books with a decent split between technical books, novels, and non-fiction. Made for a pretty comfy library. I'm constantly traveling, so having all my shit in a tablet made more sense than having a physical collection.

Scanned everything I couldn't find as an ebook, and put them all on a tablet. Figured I could use the scans on some OCR software I'm writing at work.

Seeing this thread made me sort of miss them.

>>
>>7696586
It's a shitty handwavey book seemingly aimed at american highschoolers. Definitely not a rigorous math textbook. The exercises appear to be random and the book does often fail to introduce the methodology needed to tackle them. Hell, even reading wikipedia will teach you more about algebraic topology than reading Hatcher.

Why is there a bias against story driven video games opposed to fiction books? What makes the hobo on the bus reading a great story more sophisticated than a kid playing a great story? (not call of durty or mario)

I understand that books tend to be very descriptive, but so is the Lore of World of Warcraft?

Is having no control of a story and mindless absorbing word after word really "better" than living through the story, solving problems and making decisions?

Personally I like pic related. He assumes a little bit of category theory, but otherwise it's self-contained and mathematically rigorous, and covers much more material than Hatcher does.

>>

but why?

>no control of a story and mindless absorbing word after word
>>
>>7696612
Yeah, I liked it. I think it is a great book to get an overview of the basic algebraic (modular arithmetic, quadratic reciprocity, sums of squares, some very basic facts about number fields) and analytical (Bertrand's hypothesis, multiplicative fuctions, continued fractions) tools and techniques of number theory. The only thing I think is lacking is the number of exercises. There are in reasonable number but I think the author could have included more.

>>
>>7697043
I have preferred editions of a lot of books that I bought before ereaders were a thing. I use an ereader most of the time but it's just to save money. I still appreciate a nice edition enough not to throw out the ones I have and to once in a while buy one.
>>
>>7697048
oh, of course. i would lie if i said i don't have a dozen or so special pre-ereader books, but to have more space than a simple shelf dedicated to it seems ridiculous in my opinion. most people having multiple bookcases nowadays are just using it to show how 'smart' they are. they care more about the aesthetics of the books rather than the information contained within.

I'm still in undergrad math and one of my professor recommended me Lang's undergraduate algebra. Also have been looking at "first course in analysis" in my school library for a while now but if I had them at my disposal, I'd look at the linear algebra and analysis ones to see what they're about. (I'm currently finishing up vector calc and taking those two next semester). How are the series as a whole? Would you recommend them as a good reading? Maybe I'm just drawn by the uniform aesthetics that they have, leading me to think that they'd be consistent and thorough.

Btw just noticed that you have rosen's discrete math, that's pretty sweet too. Been using it in my discrete class.
What field of math are you studying?

You even post books that are also TV shows. Would you come here and post about "the big bang theory" and game of thrones? No? Maybe you realize how retarded that would be? But it's ok of course since it is in book form and books r 4 smarts.

>>7695731
>>7695731

Maybe consider going there.
>>
>>7697276
Lang is usually a safe bet, especially for algebra. I've never read his undergrad algebra, but I like everything of his I've seen except his undergrad analysis (but I don't like analysis).

Axler's UTM Linear Algebra Done Right is neat, but you'll need another book to fill the gaps. Hoffman and Kunze is the standard.

There are lots of opinions on analysis books. People will say baby rudin, but I think that's best for your second time around. Apostol's Mathematical Analysis is better for the first time I think. He holds your hand a lot more which I needed, but again I don't have an analytic mind.

>>7697276
>How are the series as a whole? Would you recommend them as a good reading?

The GTM's are all of a pretty consistent quality and the series as a whole is very good. UTM's vary a lot more. Don't be afraid to flip through a graduate level book, especially at the library (where them all being yellow makes finding the math stacks very easy)

>>7697276
>Btw just noticed that you have rosen's discrete math, that's pretty sweet too. Been using it in my discrete class.

It's my favorite intro to discrete math book. I am studying combinatorics and some algebra in grad school presently.

It's not exactly what I would call an enticing read..
I have read some parts of it and it has been very useful but I wouldn't buy a volume, because A) I don't like the style and B) they are like 50€ a piece and impossible to understand unless you have all the volumes published before the one you are reading at hand.
I'm much better off reading the chapter I need at the library/on my computer (where I have all the other books available) whenever I feel like it.

Lighting was too shit to get a good focus. Fucked up the compression too. Maybe I should just make one of those things Purduefag keeps posting so I can add my ebooks.

The Penguin classics are the Republic, Aristotle rhetoric, Bacon's Essays, Aurelius Meditations

Burrowing quite a few textbooks to students, though most of my new ones are pictured.

It's not organized and probably not worth your time to skim for recs.
