Even though those easy calc. and other intro exercises sewm pointless right now it is far more efficient to focus on grinding and practising the baby stuff when you're taking those courses instead of worrying about research assistantships and senior coursework.
>>
>>7691857
college isn't the same thing as university you dumb dumb

Everything I know now. It would have made undergrad a hell of a lot easier.

Also not to look for a serious relationship.
>>
>>7691857
You don't need to be a honors student to take honors classes, go to the academic departments and get permission to enroll
Most math courses' prerequisites aren't necessary but are for "maturity"; override them and start taking more advanced courses earlier
You can easily do 27+ credits a semester; cram as much as will fit in
Libgen

>>7691880
I tested into college algebra but I registered a calculus 1 class, physics and chem classes that require calc 1 concurrently. hopefully they just let me do it when the semester starts. I'm just reading PDFs at home right now and just don't want to retake their dumb test.

the only hard(you have to treat it like a full time job to get a good GPA-tier) majors are the following

>Electrical Engineering
>Nuclear Engineering
>Engineering Physics
>Chemical Engineering
>Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering
>Philosophy
>Economics
>Physics
>Chemistry
>Mathematics

everything else has a noticeable drop in required effort and you have a sweet zero reasons to listen to anyone shill to you otherwise that their major is tough because it's definitely not.

let friends come to you. be friends with everyone who wants to be friends with you but don't search for them yourself.

have sex with girls if you like them. don't save yourself for a girl you love. ask any, any guy that did such a thing and they will tell you that they wish they fucked as many girls as possible when they were younger instead of waiting for some dream girl. you have to practice so you have the experience when you finally get her anyway and she'll want to have sex with you more, which will definitely make you happy.

go to things that people specifically invite you to. they want you to be there so you should be where you are wanted. you will have a nice time and get to unwind and think about things unrelated to what you're studying. it's not good to have your studies on your mind 24/7 without a break on the weekend and such.

exercise as it's the easiest way to become much more efficient and confident

drink coffee and tea for a better focus. have a beer once in a while when you're studying to get the ballmer effect.

unless you know for a fact that you will need the book for open-book tests or something of that nature, just download a PDF and save yourself the ~$100.

do whatever you have to do to get a single room. roommates suck 9/10 times.

Shit-Tier School Confirmed

What I'd tell myself:
1. Get involved with groups related to your major from day 1. Start reading research publications from day 1.
2. Freshman year is your easiest year. Enjoy your free time and have fun, but also use it to firm up any of your weaknesses with self-study.
3. Get your shit set up to do an internship your first summer (and each of the following summers) even if it's at a shitty place and you have to kiss ass.
>>
>>7691994
You think EE and Phil. are harder than Math/Phys?

EE is most definitely harder than physics at an undergrad level.

This is coming from someone in engineering grad-school with a physics bachelors.

There are hot chicks who are way smarter, and more interesting than you'll ever be.

THE SWEET
If you work hard, you get to be that smart-ass who knows fucking everything.
Bitches ain't shit if you have a decent group of bros, which you will likely have.

That I should have picked what I loved, not what I thought would be the easiest/best backup. I've always wanted to be a University professor. I picked the mathematics major because I was good at it in high school. I'm still good at it, I've already been accepted to grad school, but after 4 years of uni I realize I would probably have more fun with history or anthropology. The only benefit with math is that if I fail at becoming a professor, the backup options in the industry are better. I should have taken the risk to try a different major. But it's too late to go back now so I have to keep on.

>The only benefit with math is that if I fail at becoming a professor, the backup options in the industry are better.
What's your backup plan anon?
>>
>>7692005
What.
EE is one of the most difficult majors since it's much more involved than most degrees. Not only do you HAVE TO understand the physics behind it, you also have to be able to dynamically create equations to represent real world phenomenon since every circuit is unique and there isn't a catch all equation for all circuit properties, and you have to be able to put the circuit together with neat soldering and board design.

You have to be very mathematically inclined, manually dexterous, and slightly artistic to be an EE.

EE has more real world application especially in the class room than any other major except maybe ME and ChE.
>>
not to bother
>>
>>7691982
I'm an EE and Math double majorand I have no courses in our CS department. I have only applied math courses, math courses, physics courses, and some engineering systems design courses. Don't know what bullshit you're talking about, anon.

Now use those to find the standing wave propagation through a transmission line when a switch is closed at t=0 and the reflections of that signal on a load with a series resistor of Zs, voltage source of Vs, load of ZL, intrinsic impedence of Z0. Oh wait, you can't. Looks like you'll need to use Maxwell's equations which is still pretty simple.

Well, Pretty simple problem if you know anything about electromagnetics which is basically EE 101 which you probably don't.
>>
>>7695213
It's usually for honors students and is basically for guys going for a graduate degree. It's extremely multidisciplinary so it's considered to be extremely hard. You go into this if you want to go into R&D in applied science/engineering. I'm surprised nobody talks about it on here when measuring e-peens because the major is easily one of the hardest you can possible go into. You learn way, way more than the typical STEM major because you have to understand every aspect of many different fields.

Do your damn work, but don't think you can't be sociable. You will never have a better opportunity to make friends than your first few months at college.
>>
>>7696267
In my opinion the point of going to a university for a degree in STEM in general isn't to remember everything you're taught, it's to be exposed/ be proficient in as many topics within your field as possible so that when you encounter them later on you will be able to recognize what they are and review the material needed to approach the issue. If you want to narrow your field you go to grad school.

Of course this is just my opinion and I could just be full of shit
>>
>>7696350
pretty much this. everything is easy in hindsight and it's much easier to learn stuff a second time.

i learnt heaps of stuff during undergrad that i had forgotten but am re-learning in grad school and it's much easier this time around
>>
>>7696284
No I'm referring to the disparity between college and my high school. Not even the valedictorians of my high school could pull off 100s and they end up at places like Berkeley and Yale. But in my uni it's pretty common to get 100 on a test.

All you EE majors better suck it up and start liking CS. Because 9 out of 10 of you are just going to end up programmers. (And the other 1 in 10 will make less money. Still good money in EE though, so it isn't all that bad.)

All you science majors who only get a bachelors, you have two options, be programmers. Or be the manager at a shoe store or the like. There are no science jobs for you.

Anyone in the USA who is using their own money to pay for college, you should study "what is a bad investment". (However college is pretty fun. Does Playboy still publish the list of party schools? Anyhow, go ahead and spend your parents money or take that scholarship.)

=For some context, this advice comes from a lazy, fa/tg/uy basketweaving major who drank and fucked his way through the #1 party school and is now a programmer.

We do and we have a very low opinion of it for good reason.

It wasn't for me.

>>Engineering Physics
Can somebody try to explain to me what is this supposed to be? Engineering is literally applied physics so this is applied physics physics?

It's the first two years of mechanical engineering with quantum mechanics, EM and some classical mechanics (with calc. of variations) added in.

Like we said, meme. Just ignore it until it goes away. We can't do anything about it any more than we can with a retarded leper.

Don't take beginner textbook recommendations from a math major.

just get the old edition of the textbook. its like 15$. Undergrad Physics, Thermo, etc, hasn't changed in almost 100 years.

>engineering science/physics is meant to provide a more thorough grounding in applied physics for a selected specialty such as optics, quantum physics, materials science, applied mechanics, nanotechnology, microfabrication, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biophysics, control theory, aerodynamics, energy, solid-state physics, etc. It is the discipline devoted to creating and optimizing engineering solutions through enhanced understanding and integrated application of mathematical, scientific, statistical, and engineering principles. The discipline is also meant for cross-functionality and bridges the gap between theoretical science and practical engineering with emphasis in research and development, design, and analysis.

>While typical undergraduate engineering programs generally focus on the application of established methods to the design and analysis of engineering solutions, undergraduate program in engineering science focuses on the creation and use of more advanced experimental or computational techniques where standard approaches are inadequate (i.e., development of engineering solutions to contemporary problems in the physical and life sciences by applying fundamental principles).

AKA it's what engineers actually think they'll do instead of what they end up doing in their regular vocational program.

what is your fucking point?
>We don't "act" like, how is it surprising that people more passionate about science and hard working enough to not have an eloborate social life would end up here?
>we
>hard working
>end up here
lmao shut the fuck up

>we
just stop. it's obvious that you're pulling some major damage control because you've never heard of a major that gives you a larger e-peen than your major does.

If anyone's wondering what I recommend...

>Precalculus:
These books are all kind of the same, honestly. The book I personally use for review is Axler's. Also, I should note that Gelfand does *not* make a good primary text.

>Calculus:
I'm actually not certain what's best for here. Personally, I used Simmons' "Calculus with Analytic Geometry", and used the exercises from the Stewart text my university made me buy. I *will* recommend Banner's "The Calculus Lifesaver" as a supplement, however; it’s excellent.

Alternatively, check out his calculus lectures, as they are by *far* some of the best (he does Calculus I-III).

>Linear Algebra:
Lay’s “Linear Algebra and its Applications” is my favorite intro text here, though I don’t know if it’s necessarily the “best” or whatever.

Banner made some LA lectures, but they’re not nearly as good as his calculus ones. Strang’s range from good to an utter mess; but they might be the most recommendable, I guess.

>Discrete Mathematics:
“Mathematics: A Discrete Introduction” is far and away the nicest intro to discrete math *and* proofs I’ve seen. Gentle, without the dumbing down you see in, say, Epp.

>Probability:
Tijm’s “Understanding Probability” is great. The first half works on building intuition; and then the second gets more sophisticated with calculus and such.

>Abstract Algebra:
Pinter’s “A Book of Abstract Algebra” is wonderful; though keep in mind he teaches a lot of the concepts through the exercises; so make sure to do those. I’m also inclined to recommend “Visual Group Theory” as a supplement; though it’s not really necessary.

I regret wanting to study economics before starting physics. I wasted 2 years before I decided to either do physics or go work. I don't want to work. This is fun.

Name one good reason it would be superior to just double majoring in Physics+EE/MechE/ChemE/MSE
>>
>>7699135

At nearly every school including most top schools: If you completed >120 credits but are missing a critical course for an engineering degree and don't want to stay for an extra year, they give you an Engineering Physics degree instead.

At Princeton and only because Princeton DOES NOT ALLOW DOUBLE MAJORS: an avant-guard engineering major for new engineering areas involving cutting edge physics. People in other schools would just double major to get the required expertise.

Lol
