My laymen's understanding is that viruses generally kill the host cell on replication, which is the same mechanism which the DNA is edited, to allow the cell to live then the virus cannot be allowed to replicate, trillions and trillions of virus vectors have to be produced from a method other than normal replication

Economics op, everyone in the thread talks about muh ethics but the sheer resource and time sink of it is what kills mass gene therapy, especially mass genetic engineering.

Your only hope is to build programs that can rapidly simulate genome trails for human individuals and populations going through generational cycles/ calculating future gene bahavior. Otherwise you won't see any fruit of your labor for centuries because humans don't have the life spans of plants, rats and fruit flies.
