To create a light saber we would need:

we can do lasers, but they can't be used like that.

an actual weapon like that CAN be created using magnetically contained super heated plasma.
the down side is we can't make plasma generators that small. a modern model would require a plasma generator fitted to the back of a semi-truck.
also such a sword is impractical in modern combat, better to use a tomahawk and assault rifle.
