for most it doesnt. thats why obesity is such a problem. they get too caught up in what they eat, essentially creating their own prison then relapse.
if you actually work out hard everyday then theres no issue with rewarding yourself.

and the calorie thing is kinda true depending on the person. the one thing i see work against people is them drinking their calories (coffees, cokes, juices) because its so easy too, and in large amounts

that's true, you probably don't need to worry about that if you work out. i don't work out though, i just lose weight with a calorie deficit and sitting on my ass all day. im not weak willed and dont relapse so that's why it works for me.
