Technically, on proper boards, it's a humble way of posting that expresses the perceived insignificance of a contribution by its poster that doesn't bump the thread to the top. On imageboards, however, it used to be an insult - but with the e-mail field long-gone, you can only guess if somebody replied with sage and insults have to be direct.
