I think it comes from the idea of someone using a trip to begin with. People don't like them because they think the person uses it thinks they're so great that their posts should be protected and everyone should know who they are. I have nothing against people who use tripcodes for legitimate reasons but I think half the fun of a namefig is when you reach a stage of recognition great enough to have other people bother using your fig, whether for good or bad purposes. It's a mark of namefig achievement.
