I'm reading E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series right now. It's pure space opera, and I think a lot of people would be unable to take it seriously: there are scenes with slide-rules, unambiguous good and evil, and destruction on a planetary scale. It's really great stuff, though.

It's the Dark Tower of Dracula fiction.
Imagine every piece of Victorian history mixed with fiction and Dracula married the Queen of England. Literally the only thing missing from it is Castlevania.
