Still a long way to go. If you're hoping for a sleek android waifu then it's probably going to be at least 25-30 years. The first gen could come out within 5 though, by the looks of things. Expect them to be slow, clumsy, and difficult to talk to, with limited ability to interact. In a way though that could be cute.

Speaking for myself, my favo robots (and animes!) to be friends with are the ones that are people. But people who identify as non-people are okay by me too. :^)
