My employer does 100% match up to 2% then 50% match up to 5% so I didn't even sign up for it because like what's the point

You're making a mistake.
You're literally turning down free money. You make no money off of a savings account.
I had a 401k started with my employers matching similar to yours right after the recession so I got stocks dirt cheap. I've made a considerable amount of money just on growth and interest alone and it's just sitting there waiting for me, making more money for me until I hit 65.

I have a mutual fund that I've been depleting for years and I plan to start putting money back into it once I have a certain amount of savings, perhaps $10k
I feel like I need to have all my savings somewhat accessible because my mental health still feels tenuous. A couple thousand locked away in a 401k isn't going to help if I end up unemployed on the street.
