explaining memes is sometimes the only way to validate them.

example: if you took a random ufc saturday night sampling of every single poster that posted the "heem" meme on /sp/ and somehow teleported into each of their rooms, sequestered them and asked them to explain the meme I'm betting you'd only get 10% or less to be able to explain the specific etymology and history with any sort of accuracy.

what this means: you have 90% of the people keeping a meme going looking like meme-spouting teenagers who are all summerfags. this makes memes and memeing in general look absolutely horrid and juvenile.

on the flip side, if a meme is explained and the people propogating it actually know the history and context of it, regardless if they were there from it's inception (which, let's be honest, barely anyone ever is which means the meme would have no chance of succeeding if we were to hold memeing to such high of a threshold of usage), then the meme has a richer sense of authenticity and there are greater chances of better memes being created from it.
