this place actually looks nice, I envisioned LI as being like a shitty east coast beach with grey frigid water, clouds, cold weather and syringes.

Long Island is beautiful, 180 miles long, widest is 18 miles. We have so much history and culture, we have old towns with that vintage look, the gold coast with million dollars homes, state parks all over, pine barrens, the bay, sound sound, farms, wineries, do we have bad areas? Yes, every state has them, but where can you live where your a train or car ride to the city, an hour or so to the mountains, a 3, 4 or less drive to Philly or Boston. It's expensive and traffic might suck when you get closer to the city, but there is so much from the hamptons to Brooklyn and Queens to the north fork and out to Montauk. You drive a mile or two and scenery changes. I'm blessed to live on Long Island. Great place to do photography too.

It is beautiful. the beach was great today. summer people aren't swarming in droves yet and the warm, spring sun is out. i'm more of a mountain person, but you can't deny there aren't many places like LI.

i grew up on LI and then moved to Southern California. SoCal has much more things to do than LI. You can enjoy the outdoors all year long in SoCal and only part of the year in LI. You can go boating any time of the year in SoCal. You are an hour awzy from the mountains with hiking and ski resorts, the beaches are right there, and the beauty incredible. Both places suffer frpm traffic congestion, worse in SoCal but still very bad on LI. The infrastructure on LI is aging and in bad need of replacement. SoCal gets its infrastructure rebuilt often--whenever there is a significant earthquake. Of the two places, SoCal was definitely the better place to live.
