i had my jobcenter appointment on thursday, and they told me that "i should really go" to one of these course measures that they put on for job seekers. i have done two of these in the past and hated every minute (and that wasn't even in vienna, so that was at least bearable).
the thing is, they literally cut your pay within the same month if you don't show up to that, they more or less force you to, and i noticed only this morning that the info day for this course measure is at the exact same date and time as my preliminary test for my apprenticeship (9am tomorrow).

so now i'm facing the probability that i won't get any more money past this month, so i'm VERY stressed out over it
safe to say that i'm not getting any sleep tonight (though i wasn't gonna do that course measure anyway).

well, their deal is to keep you on the hook for as long as they can, since the workers there make commission off you and have more-or-less a vested interest in you not progressing along. when you do one of those courses (which this one is about 4 months long, the previous two i was forced to endure were 6 months each), you don't count as unemployed, so they also use you to brush up statistics and make a gray number for unemployed people.
i will tell them that i had that test today, i'll just call them after i finish it and i'm back home. it might be too late, but honestly i'm not too fussed. i would simply get a new date within the weak and have my pay cut slightly later.
the best i can do is try to reason with them that i don't need it, but i doubt i'll have much success. they're trained to shoehorn you into this bullshit, after all.

i still don't really know what to expect from that preliminary test though, that's also making me really nervous.

No, I'm the head of engineering for one though. So I don't have a lot of hiring power unless it is in engineering (and I just got a new employee), but, I'd ask in the office if someone needed a generalist. I feel like a lot of what offices need is just a general goto person that is intelligent for oddball stuff.

Honestly I'd love to have a company with a bunch of smart robots, provided they were mildly interested in what they were doing.

that's what i heard too. we had the opportunity to talk with the ex-chief recruiter at IBM for a few hours and he says mostly the same thing.

i'm just gonna try to handle this as elegantly as possible. i'll show up to the preliminary exam tomorrow, then call the jobcenter guys once i'm home about 90 minutes later. if they don't like it, then tough shit, i guess. it's not like i didn't mention this opportunity to them to begin with, i just noticed that the dates overlap when it was already too late to let them know, so monday is the earliest option.

Yeah, business in the real world is very different than how I thought of it when I was in school. For example, I'm not even that good of an actual engineer, I'm actually pretty shit, but I'm good with project management and getting people smarter than me to do the analytical work. I use a lot of contracted experts, or even some of my vendors.

i'm sure you're exaggerating a bit about workers rights, but we don't exactly have "national healthcare" either. i'm going to lose the only bit of health insurance i had as well, if i get dropped from that jobcenter program, which i certainly will sooner rather than later.

i suppose that's the price you pay with this kind of nativism. it's not that i disagree with his goals, but i'm not sure if the ends justify the means while still being as much of a powerhouse as the united states are. it almost feels like globalism is inevitable in this way.
he's definitely made huge waves here though, where we can afford to be a bit more protective. it's all rather shambolic in central europe right now, sadly.

We do work too hard, but regarding the healthcare.. I'm not too up to date on comparing all that, but I do know my friend that works at Porsche pays about the same as I do for his health insurance with comparable coverage. He has an upgraded coverage. So I think if you make decent money in the US, versus decent money in Germany, the cost ends up being about the same because you end up paying for better insurance in Germany - or at least he and his family do.

Yeah, I think the cuddles are more of interest to me then the sex. I think it's lack of companionship I crave more than anything else, but, having a girlfriend sounds more and more like a hassle with a lot of downsides at this point.
