Anon, I wish to ask a genuine question. I'm a guy with a fetish that has nothing to do with gas masks, and I've struggled with the "why do I like the thing I like" question for some time. I'd speculate that fetishes arise from some sort of strong response that gets miswired. It can be mundane, it can be more or less intense, it can be more or less necessary for you to be very keen on sex at all.
It's not all high profile stuff like pain or bring out the gimp or Israeli holocaust porn, it's just responding to something in a nonstandard way and I don't think it's something you should overthink.

my guess would be:
1. gas masks could be an offshoot of some military/post-apo/steampunk fetish - they're quite common in those settings
2. oftentimes the sexy comes not from what's visible, but from what's hidden - the gas mask hides the face and you imagine the grill to be 10/10

Personally, it's in conjunction with latex. I like encasement, and gas masks fill that spot nicely since you can't have a latex hood cover nose/mouth (and be able to breathe).
