The reason for the faces: try sitting still and not moving at all for 5 minutes. Try to smile and not move AT ALL!. Its quite hard to do, so they simply took a neutral face position that was easy to maintain.

Something I appreciate about wanking off to pictures like this is that I very much doubt any of these women imagined that there'd be people pleasuring themselves to their bodies around a century in the future, but maybe a few of them would fantasize about something like that, insofar as they could speculate technology allowing for the preservation and spread of their photos through magic boxes with screens.
