You'll notice that white people of either gender don't really take to racial integration unless they've first succeeded in making the non-white parties seem 'safe' first. They always discount the earthiness/tribalism which fascinates them with some form of security which emphasises that their interracial partner is not an immediate threat.

Race IS physical, so it has a huge impact on attraction. Moreover, many of the racial traits have some gender implication. Having larger or smaller lips, or eyes, or genitals, having darker or lighter skin, being stronger or taller or thinner or more aggressive or more shy.

Yeah, totally, what you were exposed to at a young age is important for what you go looking for later in life.

But the inner workings of race and gender are complex and deep. Modern culture is impatient to get to the Benneton Ad hand holding melting pot future of humanity, but trying to do that too fast just pushes stuff under the surface, for all parties. It doesn't help to rush questions of identity. Whiteness, Blackness, Brownness (of various kinds) - these are all real and personality-integrated constructs, and even if they never seem to come up in your everyday, they will remain innately sensitive issues so long as they remain mysterious.

Genuine question:
You may have met your husband young. But in general, do you feel that there is a distinction between the qualities (physical) that make a relationship happen initially, and the qualities that make it last?

Because it seems to me that the real method of selection is not this two stage process that you suggest, but rather a two type process. The different is small, but significant:

As far as I can tell female romantic attraction identifies some qualities that are sexually attractive (assertiveness, physical stature and capability, masculine markers like jawline, hair growth, skin tone etc) and some qualities that are attractive for long term companionship (gentle temperament, socially invested, conscientious worker, responsible, common interests/worldview etc).

In broad terms, there are masculine qualities which attract them for sex and feminine qualities which attract them for companionship, and since the two kinds are often mutually exclusive (or at least very hard to balance) it gives rise to different types of men (in women's eyes) who are selected for different kinds of relationships.

In the extreme, those would be the fuckboi and friendzone roles. Of course women are looking for a Synthesis of the two types, and i'm sure your husband fits that bill, but it strikes me that the female quest to find a balance of gender traits in their partner (to ensure some co-parental support as well as a genetically robust offspring) is what underlies modern dating behaviour.

I understand what you're saying, but you have to understand that such a specific analysis is kind of difficult for me, as like I said, I fell in love at 17, which is just now, 17 years ago. Back then I wasn't thinking in terms of masculinity, or compatibility really, so looking back from so far it's hard to see clearly.
I know my initial attraction to him wasn't based on his physical appearance. He was about 100 pounds, and had severe acne, but he was "cool" this had to do with our mutual interest, music. He was your typical guitar front man. I joined his band. Then I guess it progressed equally physically and emotionally, we talked a lot, about everything, everything, everything. He was my first, and I waited a full 9 months before we finally did it. Being sure of my feelings was the final step, because I was sure of his good nature very early on. He was kind, and understanding, but also really fun and carefree, totally honest, and when the time came I saw him vulnerable.

Now that I am older I think a lot of our success has to do that we got to each other we were both pure, unhurt, unjaded, but not naive. We had matured more than, perhaps our peers, which allowed us to enter into a serious relationship when we probably shouldn't have been ready.

We got married at 19, and I would still never advise anyone else to marry at 19, but I feel it had a lot to do with our success.
