Why you started learning language:
My friends and I would make fun of ridiculous German words and I started learning it because I thought it sounds ridiculous. It started off super easy due to its similarities to English but that was before all the retarded grammar rules came into play. Now I keep learning it because its good to have a second language, and it seems like everyone who has a second languae speaks Spanish or French, so its something different.

I mean you're not wrong. Hardest part for me so far is local dialects. When every letter has a sound, you expect it to make that sound unless influenced by hard or soft signs.

But no, half of Russians say it completely differently from how it's spelled, so when they say it that way, which I is not how I learned it, I don't know what they mean until I remember the different dialects or I ask them what it means.

There are major differences in pronunciation in the north and south of the country + regional dialectical variations and dialects abroad. In addition, most Russians have their own quirky way of pronouncing certain words, so there's that.

Yeah, it's a fairly good job if you can start up your own translation company. You will need some pretty sharp business acumen and top of the line language skills to compete with the natives who came to the West after '91 though. You can also go work for the EU (which pays about 500-600 Euro's a week for simultaneous translation) but it's a harrowing job and might not match your political opinions.

>Time spent learning:
Whole life but mostly put in work during and after high school. Nowadays I'll set games to Spanish text or read things in Spanish whenever the chance comes up.
>Why you started learning language:
It's my mother tongue but since I live in the U.S. there was hardly a reason to keep with it instead of learning English. Now I can speak English perfectly fine, even though I didn't have my parents ever speak it to me growing up, but can only read and listen to Spanish in any decent capacity. Talking and writing takes ages for me to do and I fumble to figure out what words I'm trying to think of.
>How proficient are you in language:
As said above. If someone were to talk to me in Spanish I could maintain a conversation by responding in English, but that's it. Also can't roll my r's and realizing how I threw away an easy opportunity to be perfectly bilingual due to growing up in a household that mocked me for speaking Spanish like a gringo makes me want to kill myself.

But I understand it's kind of cool to learn russian for a variety of reasons if you don't live here. It's just the fact that I want to gtfo of Russia so bad and get away from that culture that makes me surprised that there are people who want to know this better.

I've been learning english for 13 years now and I consider myself fairly good reader, listener and writer. Though I can't speak really well because I've been getting much less practice last 2 years and expressing my thoughts sometimes can take a while.

Also, none of you mentioned this. Do you ever think in other language? I can't measure it but I'm almost sure that if I didn't studily in russian I'd think in english 90% of the time. (Now it's maybe around 50/50)

I started recognizing some bits in anime, so I figured I could spend my time as a NEET at least somewhat productively and learn the whole language. Multilingualism is good for your brain.

Absolutely dogshit. I still sound like a kawaii sugoi weeb. I can read some of it, but still not enough to read Baby's First NHK, not even with the help of Rikai-chan. I could probably write a proper sentence with an IME, but not by hand.

English - Most of my life I guess
Japanese - A little less than a year

English - well, everyone speaks english
Japanese - didn't get into an italian course in uni and I was always a bit weeby so I figured why not

English - fluent
Japanese - I know the kanji from first 2 grades and most of the basic grammar, if I had to guess I'd put myself a little over N4 level
Italian - at this point I have forgotten most of the vocabulary and grammar so I can't even form sentences but I can usually understand (as in, get the context) what people are saying

>>
>>39643555
I do confidential work at the office, and they send some things through e-mail. A lot of translation companies in the US and Japan send work to translators remotely. Almost all of the other non-Japanese translators my company hires are from other countries. So there's definitely work out there. Try searching craiglist pages of major cities for companies that are hiring remote translators, Here's one company I know of for sure that does:

on the long run, once i am good enough to hold a more or less fluent conversation i try to find some norwegian people and speak to them, using english as a backup for things i can't express yet. its not that hard to meet people when solo-travelling through norway.

>>
>>39643683
No, it's just that I've been learning it since I was 6 and I was taught it in school throughout all 11 grades. (These were special english classes, they don't teach like that in every school, and public schools are usually really bad at teaching english.)
Then I have an english course in university and thats why I say that I've been studying it for 13 years. It's just that there is always place for improvement in english.
It's just the fact that I wasn't really interested in english culture (or international internet segment) until I was 15 in 9th grade.

But looks like many people being uninterested in it and very basic teaching in school results in the fact that it takes so long for some russians to learn the language.

Besides, it's not like there is a point where you can say thay you've learned a language. There is alwas space for some improvement.
