I don't see why fascism in its various shades and forms should be reconsidered for resurrection.

Let us not forgett, that all "fascist" regimes arose out of necessity to combat the looming threat of communism. It was a defense mechanism for the former conservative and national-liberal (I'm applying the continental European definitions of these ideological goups here) constituencies in Italy and later in Germany. Concessions were made by the grand captains of industry and the professional middle classes in form of a limited socialism so as to win over the working classes and "snatch" them away from communist influences. Without lavish funding from, for example, the Rhennish industrial conglomerates, Hitler whould've never ever been able to raise the SA and go on to create a million strong party militia out of it. Neither would he have been able to go on multiple election campaigns where he applied the most modern propaganda techniques of his day ("Hitler over Germany" for example, where he traveled Germany by plane).

The tolerance of the old societal elites was the necessary foundation that kept fascist regimes alive. Italy is the best example of that. The king relieved Mussolini from his post as prime minister after the allied landing in southern Italy in 1943 and there was nothing the Duce could do about it. It's fascinating how fast his regime crumbled away after the monarchist bureaucracy and the military withdrew their support.

All in all, "fascisms" balance sheed doesn't realy look that good. Certainly, the recovery from the depression of 1929 was more than impressive, especially in Germany which was hit much harder than Italy. But the military defeats and the failings of the fascistic aproach to the war economy weigh far heavier.
