Starting a guitar/general instruments thread here because /mu/ is actually a bigger cesspool. This is my favorite guitar, my classic vibe 50's in lake placid blue. Such a nice finish, i have 9 guitars though.
What do you play?

Pretty fucking guitar OP. I have a Samick strat that I picked up spontaneously in Pittsburgh four years back, but I never got into it

I've burned through two guitars because my rhythmic playing style I made up in 2012 is aggressive as shit. My current baby is this beautiful $700 Taylor grand auditorium that I make sound like a brass instrument, a bass guitar, an acoustic guitar and a drum all at the same time...but that shit comes at a cost. Electric components inside haven't been demolished yet like with my last Lucero (classical spanish guitar build), but my style has been boring a hole into the body literally since the first day I tried it out in the store. The guys there told me to go for a carbon fiber build for double the price that I kind of regret...but who knows if the inner electrical components would've held up

Shit's covered in wood shavings literally all the time. Hoping she holds out until I drop a grand or plus on a premium martin or taylor or whatever in the next year or two

It's a stylistic choice. Picks are considered more suitable for certain genres. If you're playing djent for instance, you almost certainly should use a pick. On the other end of the spectrum, classic rock might be more suited to using your fingers. At the end of the day, just go with whatever sounds better to you. I myself prefer fingers 95% of the time, I only take out my pick when I'm playing something that has little dynamic change.
>>
>>39531445
>If you're playing djent for instance, you almost certainly should use a pick

Depends. You'll eventually get when to use it or not, but you should learn how to play with a pick at some point. It's standard in most genres and for a good reason.
>>

Huge chance no matter what teacher you go to, they'll be teaching in E standard. So it's kind of useless to get an 8-string for the purpose of taking lessons unless you already know some 8-string guy who's down to teach. Anyway, you'd be better off getting good with 6 strings and then expanding in a couple years if you still want to
>>
>>39531629

Don't be that faggot who can't really play who turns up to lessons with his numetal meme guitar.

Buy a quality 6 string and learn what to do with it

I have an Epiphone Les Paul and a Jackson DK2. I really like both of them, but I want to buy a 8-string soon because I play a lot of djent and progressive metal. I also want to buy a Line 6 Pod so I can record stuff and make my own music.

I'm also currently trying to learn relative pitch, and I'm trying to write my own songs and learn to improvise better.
>>
>>39524834
/gg/ became shit like 3 years ago after the funny trips left like gearspammer and froosh. it's trash now. it's the same fags sucking at the guitar and posting the same crappy stuff over and over x 99999

Gibson finally started making Les Paul's without pickup rings. I really like the new colours too. Not sure how I feel about the fade disappearing on the bottom of the guitar.

For once they're offering more interesting colours than Ibanez.

How long would it take for me to learn guitar knowing I've had piano lesson for 8 years and saxophone for 6
>>
>>39533596
I envy you lad. I've just started learning piano after playing guitar for 8 years. It's easier than the two you've already learned so I can't see you having much trouble.
>>
>>39533596
I started playing the guitar after playing piano for 7-8 years. Took me like a half a year for the basics and about 2 more years to get good. And then 4 years of not practicing to be shit again
>>
Third world poorfag here. I've learned to play on a crappy acoustic I borrowed from my cousin. I've saved up some money and am gonna buy me a nice budget guitar in a few months. Was setting my sights on a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster, because I can't spend much more than ~400 bucks, but would you recommend me something else? I also can't just go into a local shop and play something myself before choosing - all they have is either shitty Chinese copies or American models for rich kids, with no inbetween.

>they own a squier
your guitar is utterly useless. kys
>>
>>39533745
the only squier I've played on was pretty bad, but putting in active pickups improves them a million fold though, right?
>>
>>39533596
I also started with piano and saxophone. You pretty much have two advantages - you don't have to worry about learning about melody and rhythm and all that basic shit, and your fretting hand is already used to moving with finger independence and dexterity. Overall the motions are still pretty foreign and how quickly you get good all depends on how much practice you're willing to put in like with anything else

Feels bad man. I wish people would just do the things they're supposed to do. Band drama feels too much like dumb relationship shit a lot of the time

50W peak, 20W RMS is pretty loud and very few manufacturers, especially cheaper ones go by RMS anymore.

Not them but I have a Squire that I only use for practice. Heavy gauge strings and higher action so I can increase my strength. I was trying to go for the SRV feel

>>39541048
Buy one from ebay and collect it, older the better when it comes to guitars imo, al the new ones are shit made in China from plywood - if you're talking about low end for beginners anyway

Got unmotivated eventually though. My wife can play whatever she wants on piano, guitar or flute just by looking at the music. I struggle with tabs.

I think to myself oh, maybe if I got a nicer guitar. But hers is a 100 dollar epifone acoustic

Oldbot here, I collected 1950s Duos back when they were cheap and I was employed. GREAT guitars. The Mexican made ones from the 90s are very good with a pickup upgrade. The Classic Vibe Duo is excellent for the price.
>>
>>39535946
Nice Custom you got there. I bought a few back when I was earning money - the one I usually go for is a `98 whale blue Hollowbody II. Someday I'll install a Varitone and wire it for stereo output, like an old ES-345.
