How else would I know?
1. Not smart enough to go to college (IQ of 87 if you wanted to know)
2. Poor and to nervous to talk to people to get a loan.
Posting from school. I'll be 50k in debt by age 23 but its ok because engineering......right?
Unfortunately you can't use grants towards rent / food cost of living etc, it only covers tuition and fees. Can't even use grants to buy required textbooks.
>tfw accepting full award amount for both subsidized and unsubsidized financial aid loans
And it's STILL not enough, I still have to work 20 hours a week on top of going to college full time to make rent and pay the bills.

Why can't you use it for rent/food/COL? Don't they send you a check of the excess award money?

Grants are free money and they're automatically applied to tuition and fees. Fees being like... parking fee, wellness fee, technology fee, lab fee etc to use campus facilities. You don't have to accept them and excess grant money isn't disbursed.
Financial aid is used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books etc if it's not fully covered by grants. You have to accept financial aid because it's a loan that has to be paid back. Any excess aid is disbursed after the first few weeks of classes, either by check or direct deposit.
