My parents used to hit me until they realized it didn't work, and they would ground me and confiscate my electronics until they realized that didn't work, and then they stopped punishing me when they realized my depression punished me enough.

They didn't really discipline me

They just yelled at me, but they realized it was not really useful as I'm naturally mature and I know it when I do something wrong

Used to hit me whenever whatever I didnt do whatever they told me for the nth time, went as far as using belts once in a while.
Nowadays im still impressed that my mother thinks yelling at me will have any effect in my actions, wether she asks me nicely or with a gun to head my reaction will be the same.
In the end I guess it worked, mentally I understand perfectly why they had to do it, but im still struggling to be smart about it and actually do the things.

Hitting people is illegal in my country, so not like that at all. I love the man who raised me, which is why it hurts so much to be such a failure. I was adopted at age 10 by him after having a "childhood" I'd rather not talk about. He was really patient with me and understood me perfectly. He encouraged me to do things I felt like I couldn't do, which at least helped me accomplish those things. But, only in the past year or two have I actually become somewhat confident in my abilities. I felt extremely indebted to him so I did everything I could to not be a burden and to be "perfect". Sadly this led to me putting on one heck of a mask. He tried to get me to not feel that way but I wouldn't listen to him, or to myself.

I mean, I was born in Russia, but I was raised by him in Norway, where it is most certainly illegal. Plus, even if it wasn't, people wouldn't do it here. It's frowned upon heavily because of the copious research that shows how harmful it is to children. (And in my opinion, you don't even need scientists to tell you that; I've never met a child who could not be reasoned with, especially after they've calmed down. The ones who usually need the time outs are the parents. But most kids nowadays are surprisingly logical and even very young children seem to be reacting to reason much better than they were when I was growing up. My parents never hit me or discipline me at all really, save for a few times when I messed up and my father lost his temper. They normally would just explain to me that what I did was wrong and why. It was my older siblings that would beat me or lock me in a closet for the most insignificant things. If I was fortunate enough to have children I hope I could be even half the man that my father was and raise my child the way he did.

I babysit my nephew sometimes and while he's certainly hyperactive, he's only a year and a half old but can be reasoned with. Yelling or saying "don't do that" will rarely suffice with any kid, unless they really like you, though. You have to give them a reason not to that isn't "I'll hit you/yell at you/take something away". That's not how you creat effective reasoning. Saying, for example, "don't take away your sister's toys, she was playing with them first. she will give them to you when she's done playing. you don't like it when others take your toys away, so don't take away her's, okay? be kinder and find something else to play with."

Really weird how I turned out. I was a real shit-kicking kid who never felt bad about anything and always got away with it, but now I'm usually the moral guru of my (Not entirely robot) circle of friends and am considered a very friendly, trustworthy, and approachable person.

I have no idea how to feel about it.My parents were never really parents, just roommates that cooked, and I've turned out a good person, but other people I see with similar home situations are just abhorrent mongoloids.

I think it's wrong to hit a child, but if someone was spanked a few times as a kid but grew up in an otherwise very good household with otherwise loving and understanding parents one could argue that you can't be that loving or understanding if you hit your children, but many parents just simply don't know not to, or are too stuck in their ways, well it'd certainly be better than being raised in a household where you were never hit, but always yelled at or had very apathetic parents who didn't care about you or supported you.
