A lot of a business's orders may be carry out and they often have to hire someone specifically for that job. I am one of those people. I have to pack up your orders securely while there might be 10 of them on the line, refill sauces, packing materials, answer the phone. All the while paying attention to the fact that you need "light curry" in your fried rice or exactly 3 packets of mustard for minimum wage. Yes, fast food employees rarely make more than that for just as much work, but they often can't accept tips anyway.
Also, no more than a 10% tip is expected. But more is appreciated.
Tips are the difference between not being able to pay my rent every month and being somewhat comfortable while in school. 12$ an hour because 2/3 of people tip a couple dollars is a whole hell of a lot better than 7.25.
I feel this issue often falls under the category of there being two types of people: those who have worked food service, and those who haven't. If you have, you know how much it fucking blows and how much tips mean. A couple dollars is not going to make or break you, but possibly raising someone's wage to livable is definitely going to make their life a whole lot easier.

Why do you deserve tips over the minimum wage workers in retail?

the work isn't exactly similar. One is much more valuable, because their customers are willing to pay more. What you're paid is based not at all on the amount of work you put into it, but rather on the value your produce. It is by no means an arbitrary way to pay someone.

I'd say it's very similar. Both work to facilitate my purchase of goods. Writing down orders and carrying plates is no harder than ringing up items and stocking shelves
