The lottery has ruined my life. I started playing it about a year ago. First I was only buying a few tickets a week. After a few months I started spending my entire paycheck as soon as I got it on powerball tickets and scratch offs. Eventually my money ran out. In January I took out my first payday loan for 250 dollars to pay for tickets. Today I own loan companies almost fifty thousand dollars. There is no way for me to pay any of this off. Please don't end up like me.
>>
>>39332122
Holy shit are you that guy who kept posting lottery threads? I wonder what happened to you. Man that sucks, I lost $100 on blackjack then got drunk and lost another $200 and want to blow my brains out but I still have $500 in savings so I can bounce back. I have to stop thinking I can win it back

On Wednesday night I had almost 300 powerball tickets for the 700 million dollar drawing. After going through all of them I realized I wasn't a winner. That was my last chance at being able to get out of this mess without killing myself. Now I have no other options left.

Lmao
Dont give up. Ur bound to win one day
>>
After realizing I didn't win I crawled back into bed and started crying. I guess my mother must have heard me because she came into my room and asked what was wrong. I told her I didn't win the powerball. She looked confused and asked how much did I spend on it. I told her I spent 600 dollars. I wanted to see her reaction. If she was nice and understanding maybe I would tell her about the payday loans. Instead she started yelling at me and called me an idiot for wasting my money like that. Her saying that just made me cry even more. I heard her go downstairs and she started talking to my father. The only think I could clearly understand her saying was "fucking retard". I then heard my father say something like "well when I was his age". They have barely spoken to me since.
>>
>>39332122
You're a fucking genius anon. Thanks for playing :)
>>
People on this website told me I should speak to someone about my problems so I spoke with my manager. I told him about how I owed fifty thousand and that I had to find a new job to make more money so I couldn't work for him anymore. He said he understood and he felt bad for me. He gave me the phone number and address of his cousin who lives in New York. He told me that his cousin has helped people like me before and that I should look into going there sometime.

>>
Rule number one is the house always wins

Why did you ignore rule number one
>>
>>39332427
I am addicted because wining the lottery is the only chance I have to escape this awful life. I have to mostly stop because I have almost no money left. I did purchase a few tickets for tonight's drawing but as usual I didn't win.
>>
anon you have a gambling problem, you need to seek help
>>
>>39332122
Get someone to manage your money for you ASAP

The same thing happened to one of my relatives, and the incessant spending was only finished after my aunt started managing her money.
>>
>>39332501
It's not over yet! You need to come clean to your parents. Tell them exactly how much debt you're in and how buying more tickets is your only chance at redemption. Maybe they will come around and keep buying tickets for you.
>>
>>39332456
I thought I was different. I thought I would beat the odds and prove to everyone that I was right and they were wrong. Looks like I was the wrong one.
>>39332519
I wish I would have done so sooner but it's too late for that.
>>
>>39332169
nah i think that was me. i posted maybe 3 a couple weeks ago. i've probably spent like a thoudand so far and won back maybe 300 of it. trying to cut back but i still spend like 200 a week. been on a bad losing streak lately. when i first started i was almost breaking even, now its just all losses. going to try and go a few days without buying any.
i've found i have better results buying like 10 cheap tickets rather than one expensive one. if i can make it a month without buying any i think i'll be good. but part of me still wants to go out and buy 10 20 dollar tickets before i call it quits.

Tomorrow I'm going to run away from my home and never come back. My parents told me car insurance is due soon and it is more money than I have. I'm going to pretend to go to work tomorrow. But I'm really going to go to New Hampshire. I will register my car there because in NH you don't need to have car insurance. After I leave NH I am going to go to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. I will park my car and walk miles into the woods. When I find a spot that nobody will ever find me in I will kill myself there. I don't know if I will be able to access this website from the road so consider this my goodbye to all of you.
>>
Why don't people know that the cure for gambling addiction is teaching adults elementary math?
>>
>>39332624
OP before you kill yourself or do anything rash you need to read the manga or watch the anime Kaiji. Do it tonight if you have to.
>>
>>39332122
I bought two lottery tickets in my life, one for a dollar and one for two dollars. Both were winners for two dollars and five dollars respectively. I broke the system in my mind and I'm happy with that, never bought another ticket again. I used to play poker games here and there with friends bjt only ever like 10 dollar games and it was just a friendly thing to do while drinking. I've never understood the gambling addiction I guess, I was hooked on heroin for years but still dabble with other stuff I've just never got into gambling.

You're welcome.
>>39332676
Lottery tickets are probably similar to drugs. Sometimes I'll just be sitting at home and I'll get the urge to go out and buy. After I buy a few I look at the numbers and get excited thinking about how I can finally be rich and live the life I always dreamed of.
>>
Apply for bankruptcy OP it's your only hope.
And don't buy into the scam that is gambling.
Nothing in this life will ever magically happen to you. You have to make it happen man. Best of luck man.
>>
How old are you?
It's going to be okay OP.
50k in really not much that money. It's around 2 year of salary minimum wage.
Stop gambling and pay off debt first.
>>
>>39332685
OP that was a dumb idea. The chances of you winning even when playing with lots of tickets is so ridiculously small you might as well have better luck robbing a bank. I'm not saying you should, but you could.. But if you're going to off yourself, you might as well do something interesting. Also, you could just keep living and start paying the loan off slowly. As long as it's from an actual bank and not people who show up at your house with bats when you don't pay up. Doesn't the loan just land on your relatives when you pass away? That'd be kinda dickish of you to your parents who are already dissapointed

I'd rather waste the money on drugs, at least there's a gauranteed reward rather then completely throwing your money away
>>
>>39332817
I'm 20 and it's not going to be okay. If I ever did decide to pay it off it would probably take me at least 5 years, It's too much to bother with. I'm sick of living like this.
>>39332777
If I did apply my parents would find out and I can't let that happen. I know it's a scam but it's also my only chance. I have no money left so I won't be playing anymore.
>>39332820
Nobody will know that I'm dead so they won't have to pay. I'm gong to send my parents a letter after I run away confessing to everything. I'm going to lie in the letter and say I'm joining the military or something like that.
>>39332888
You probably never had to live like I did so you'll never understand seeing the lottery as your only way out of an awful life.
>>
My mother is/was a gambling addict, she spent all of our money & government money on gambling.

I hate people like you so much.
>>
>>39332980
And then what? When the banks come looking for you at your home adress (your parents' house from what i can gather in the thread) and then either the bank or your parents will check with the military to see if you enlisted. Which you didn't. And then they'll be there with a dead son and 50K in debt. It's not a good idea anon. You need to see someone about your problem, maybe that guy your supervisor suggested. If he deals with gambling addiction, he has probably got some tips on how to fix the debt issue
>>
>mfw was really tempted to spend $2 for that powerball but decided not to because i didnt want to want to look like degenerate scum buying a lotto ticket at a gas station
>>
>>39333124
They will have no obligation to pay off any of my debt. None of the loans were spent on either of my parents. I just want them to think I'm in hiding. They have no reason to think that I'm going to kill myself. I'm still not sure if I will be going to see the guy that my boss recommended. I will be driving through New York so I could go there.
>>
>>39332817
>50k in really not much that money. It's around 2 year of salary minimum wage.

min wage yearly is $15k
this doesn't include taxes taken out.

that's around 3 years, assuming he uses his full paycheck to pay off the loan. this means he cannot buy anything for himself for 3 years.

this is also very unrealistic because most people with that kind of debt dont have the luxury of living with their parents. I live with my parents and still pay rent, bills and such.

>>
>tfw always fantasize about winning the powerball
>have never and will never play it on my entire life
>>
>>39333245
You're also forgetting interest. Realistically minimum wage will be barely enough to keep paying off interest.
>>
>>39332199
You need to realize that with a drawing the size of the powerball, having 1 ticket or 300 makes absolutely no difference from a statistical point of view. Just buy one 2 dollar ticket a day and be done with it.
>>
>>39333193
The lottery is known as the "poor person tax". Stop paying the poor person tax.

Just take a deep breath and imagine yourself in a better place in 10 years. If you die, there is nothing there in 10 years.
There are people living in 3rd world countries that'll never have to luxuries you have, even as a poor person.
Try calling those debt relief/consolidation companies. Try asking your family (even extended family) if you can live with them so you can work off your debt. If all else fails, bankruptcy is an option I guess, but you should really only use that as a last resort.

Hang in there man. Just think about the future. You honestly believe that 20 years from now that if you stop making stupid decisions that your life won't get any better?
>>
I honestly can never understand the mentality of buying more than one ticket. Only one will win, and the chances of 1000 tickets vs 1 are statistically insignificant with the types of odds of the powerball.

It's just supposed to be the one and done when it gets big and to wonder, what if?

It's not a legitimate possibility to actually plan on.

I really feel bad for OP. Seriously m8 just go bankrupt. It's 7 years of bad credit and your mom and dad will be pissed. So fucking what? Better than offing yourself? Just get a job at Walmart and save up like the rest of us.

Making it big to live a full life is a meme. We're all mostly mediocre and that which is expected of us should reflect that.

Give yourself a chance at that life OP, don't throw it away because of something that can be easily unfucked.
>>
Could be worse man, you could be one of those heroin addicts out there.
Those people are fucked.
You're not.

If drugs like heroine are illegal, gambling and lotteries should be illegal for the same reason. For some people, they activate some kind of reward mechanism in the brain that they just literally can't stop trying activate after that first hit. It really is a literal disease.

I'm generally pretty libertarian, but lotteries are exploitative, pure and simple. And it's not just exploitation of stupid people, but of people whose brains are wired in a particular way that that hit of hope dopamine is just like a hit of crack.

However I don't think they're bad, since some of the money goes to charity, where as buying illegal drugs just serves the drug dealer/user.

If a person doesn't have the discipline to not feed into their compulsions, then they never had a chance at being a decent person anyway.

Instead of a lottery, they would have been buying a bunch of useless shit because it gives them dopamine rushes. Some people cannot be helped. Their brains are like small mice. All you can do is keep feeding them little bits of cheese

>>39333537
No, the person is insolvent, not bankrupt. There's a difference.
>>
>>39333673
You are retarded to. Actually equally retarded. You're saying he's stupid for having better odds then you ? You're both stupid for wasting money on it at all. The OP at leadt realizes it's a waste of money but he spends more. You just buy less but don't realize it's a waste. Next time you are going to buy a ticket, take that ten dollars and shove it up your ass, next time you take a shit you'll have that dollars back. It's a guarantee that you'll win every time, or throw that ten dollar bill out the window, there's a chance that the wind will blow it back to you.
>>
>>39339197
IMO the lottery is fine if you buy one of those huge jackpot tickets once or twice a month. You're basically paying $2 or whatever it is for some really nice daydreams about what you'd do with that money. Objectively better for you then buying some chips+a soda.
>>
>>39333835
Cigarettes have benefits to the person using them though... they can enjoy it and nicotine makes you feel good. Tobacco also is a MASSIVE industry and generates a massive amount of trade. The lottery is a large business yes but it doesn't actual create any capital. Tobacco employs millions of people through production of the product, paper, cardboard, what have you plus doctors and medical spending. At least it does something for the economy. The equivalent analogy wouldn't be telling smokersthay they may get lung cancer it would be telling telling them that the cigarettes don't contain nicotine, which they do... plus it's inevitable that everyone will die whether they smoke or not, fighting death is futile, fighting going broke is common sense.

You should have learn the odds of the game.

Don't buy a million at a time, that's just a money sink. Buy at least five- ten tickets every month at different stores. The less payout the more likely you are to win and most of the time tickets that are five dollars and above aren't worth it.

Which state do you live in OP? California, Florida and New York lotteries are less brutal than the other States I've seen.

Yes it employs people, it however doesn't generate capital. There's a fundamental difference. Look into basic economic principles. Farming and manufacturing actually generate capital. The US is an unstable economy because it's almost entirely retail. The lottery basically is for the poorest of the poor and old people though who much of it bought it through social security and disability checks. Try looking at the stats of who plays the lottery it's pretty fucked up, it's pure exploitation of the poor and uneducated which for cigarettes is okay because it at least does something for the economy and shortens lifespans

it's pretty complicated I guess for some people but about 72 percent nationally doesn't go towards any government spending whatsoever, some of it goes overseas to an organization which organizes lotteries and gambling in the US but the the rest going towards state funding , which only around 15 percent on average per state goes towards education. And even at that they have to estimate how much that lottery revenue will be before the fact and the rest of that revenue goes towards pointless shit, and is forbidden from being being spent on expenditures which would normally go towards budget items. Monuments and weird shit.

The same thing with those "skill" machines at bars and what not. I've literally watched someone drop their entire paycheck into those things other then their carton of cigarettes and beer for the night. But it's not the scratch tickets that are causing your problem. It's YOU buying them. Stop blaming your problem on something like that, it's you that are buying them.

I thought it was common knowledge that people realized decades ago that hardly any money goes towards education. Besides the little bit of money that goes towards public spending after the lottery business gets paid and winnings awarded that money doesn't ADD to budget spending, it just replaces the funds that were already getting paid with the excess going towards trying to slow down the states debt. It's fucked up. Some states have great programs where it's set up to go towards education but that's like ... two states. Rhode Island gives less then a dollar per year to public spending.

Holy shit you guys are fucking idiots.

I'm not gonna say stop gambling, because gambling's awesome. But stop gambling on games where you're almost 100% guaranteed to lose over your lifetime (slots, lottery are the worst.)

Take up poker. It's fun, challenging, interesting, and you can actually win because you're playing other people and not vs the house or against impossible odds.

There are tons of people who make a living consistently playing poker. I've been taking poker seriously for about 3 years, and so far in 2017 I'm over $4k in profit. It isn't HUGE, but it's a good side income, and it's a step up from last year and the year before that. Hopefully I'll keep getting better and by next year I can make $10k profit or more, then 15, etc. Why not get into it?

>>
>>39348457
most companies and banks will give you less than one thousand no questions asked. I've taken out dozens of these loans. Probably taken out twenty thousand total. Just a guess. With months of interest it's now around fifty thousand dollars worth of debt. The loan companies target the poor with no savings so you don't really have to show that you have money.
>>
>>39349023
dude lol wtf. Btw THIS is why you won't ever be able to declare bankruptcy. Yes most student loans aren't eligible to be removed by chapter 7 but even at that you can still declare bankruptcy to forgive other loans while still maintaining the student loan debt. However the fact you did absolutely nothing to pay your student loans back and instead just played the lottery and continued to take out more loan to play the lottery you'll never be able to declare bankruptcy in your life. You're fucked. And you should be.

>>39354241
no he can't lol that's not how declaring bankruptcy works. If he were seriously mentally ill that would be a different story but basically he's just fucked. An addiction doesn't qualify as a reason to default on loans, on top of loans, on top of loans especially if he doesn't live on his own and what not. If he's living with his parents that's a huge thing right there that bankruptcy can't be declared, basically he's still dependent by law and by obvious reasons. You can't just declare bankruptcy for random reasons and expect it to go through.
>>
>>39354497
or just move to Mexico ... then again they don't really like people coming over the border their way because there's no real benefit other then crime. We in the US however are literally dependent on illegal immigration to survive, not just legal. If we were to remove all illegal migrant workers we literally wouldn't be able to feed our population. Mexico kicks us out because we don't bring anything to the table and just creates problems. If anywhere honestly if I were OP I'd move to somewhere in eastern Poland and get a farm job and say fuck it. Or move to parts of the UK where there's heavy slavic immigration for farm work and get a job there. He's completely fucked. Honestly the best solution is to start a new life ... he can't declare bankruptcy and those loans aren't going to be forgiven, they will be enforced by rule of law or he'll live on the streets with a new identity of having none. The only way he'll be able to continue is if his parents take on the debt and pay for it themselves. Bankruptcy doesn't cover this sort of thing so it's best to go and start life over. Take another few loans out and take five grand with you to start it all over. But he obviously doesn't have the mental fortitude for that sort of switch. Where does OP live again ?

Then learn a new language. Man I live in Ohio. And as an immigrant I'm ashamed of you. My family actually pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps after coming here from eastern europe. If you are determined to do anything about your situation you can learn a new language. I know polish, german, english, hebrew and can understand a lot of slavic languages if they are spoken to me roughly but can only speak very roughly in them. It sounds corny but if you don't want things to change they won't change. You have to some form of will. But hey this slavic jew here will pay his taxes to support you and I don't care, I just hope you can change your life around but it's going to take growing a set of balls first, if you are willing you can go into what is essentially a form of semi bankruptcy. Go to a bank and set up a system that can consolidate your loans and basically you'll only be paying one place vs going to court over all different places you've accumulated debt through, and in court you'll be royally fucked dude. You need to start speaking with people who understand the situation you are in and not just your parents. A good advisor can help you, even if you would go to a local job and family services center they can help you figure out how to set up a way to pay stuff back.

Really? 40-50k in ohio is pretty strong, cost of living is mildly low here though so its more than likely where the other guy is coming from.

for a college graduate 35 to 50k is pretty damn decent come out of college... you start at the wage and that's plenty livable and more but your work up fast vs staying at a shit ass wage for life. It depends on your major but around 40 to 50 is decent for most. I started at much more but also double majored and had the job my senior year already maintained. Then they paid for my post grad work as well. If you can't live comfortably while just graduation on that much you aren't smart enough to have gone through college and obviously were just living off your parent's money.

>>

>But how can you still get the rush after months of not winning?
no, you definitely win, in small amounts. You buy a $2 ticket and might win $10 or $20, just enough to keep you buying more and more. That's how they hook you. Your loses will always outweigh the wins though.

>Maybe my dopamine circuits are too fried for it or it just doesn't click with me.

>>
>>39356093

No, no. the $500/month living expense was my first job after college. The pay was still >10k/mo though all included (ie stock, etc. base was still 6 figures but <10k/mo), but it wasn't an internship. The 10k/mo were the internships. I was spending like $1000-1500/mo total average during said internships (all on west coast). (mostly on rent - I live very frugally due to growing up poorfag)

>>39356316

I've worked for several of the big-four, yes (ie Google, FB, Amazon, MS). They all pay about 10k/mo if you are including the stipends, which I was, since it's given to you in your paycheque just like salary with no restrictions.

Did a few different ones during the summers of year 2 and 3. So I guess I had just finished 2nd year.

>Ok, what type of features did you implement in these games that got you in the door?

I *highly* doubt they mattered, but I wrote the engine myself. Just basic stuff. No networking/etc. Codebase is like 40,000-50,000 lines for the engine. Seriously, especially for internships, HR spends like 10 seconds on your resume. Then any engineer going over it after that won't spend much time either. You're severely overestimating how much they care. At most they'll glance at your github to see it's not empty. They'll definitely not read through your code - they're far too busy for that. Hell, one of my managers (who chose me/interviewed me for the team) would forget a lot of stuff about me - I really, really doubt he took more than an extremely cursory glance at anything I did in my github.

>should in no way be connected to your real identity

It does.

>What stuff

Mostly games. I did some other stuff. I wrote a basic compiler, but that was after my first internship, it wasn't there for my first one, and I'm pretty sure after the first one my portfolio was entirely glanced over once they saw I had already completed an internship at a prestigious company.

I mean there were also random other stuff too like IRC bots, image manipulation programs, etc.

Really, besides a bit higher taxes, the cost of living isn't bad if you live with roommates (which I do everywhere since I'm a total Jew). Like sure I'm paying $400 vs $1100 in rent, but that's only a $8,400/year difference.

But, yeah, if you want to live in a luxury apartment to yourself you'll be paying out the ass.

As I said before. CS majors are typically pants on head retarded about CS. If you're engineering or physics or mathematics you'll do just fine. Even outside that, major doesn't matter if you can code.

Keyword: competent.

70% of CS majors are incompetent.

100 - 200k starting lol. And in the EU you have a much better paying job, and a guaranteed job at that.
>>
>>39356785

Did you not see >>39356439 ? Those are internships. For full time you get even higher wages than that + usually a bunch of stock too.

Seriously, software pays garbage in the EU. Complete and utter garbage. The lower end jobs in EU do pay more than US, but software (and a lot of engineering/tech) is a huge exception. Even within the same company, Euro wages are trash compared to USA.

If you had said some other field, you might have had a point, but not in tech.

115k base (175k total starting)

95-115k (this is base - they also get bonus/stock which *significantly* adds to this)

(not starting, but 114k base, 302k total averaged across everyone)
(starting is 110k base + bunch of stock worth a lot)

I might not make $100k a year but at least there aren't any distinguishing fags and trannies where I live. All of those companies seem like they'd be plagued with them.

No, at least from my experience, they're mostly just Chinese people. There might be trannies/fags in HR, though.

Ohio, right?

honestly I would prefer CA over WA, but that particular ship has sailed. Besides, I would not want to be on their SRE team after what happened Saturday.
>>
>>39357880

I don't think I'd want to be a SRE, period.

OP I'm 20. I live in a basement with someone else. I make minimum and can't work past 33 hours a week or else I break down. I'm going to school full time too. I pay rent and other bills but manage my money poorly. 26k in debt because of school. I failed out 3 times due to mental health and my mother called me a worthless shit. This is going to be either your epiphany or the end. There are times I run out of food too. You need to check into a mental hospital asap. Say you are planning to kill yourself or just be honest I don't know. But you'll get some respite. They'll give you meds to chill out.
