for those of us who played it at launch Half Life was a quantum leap in terms of what one could achieve in a game engine, the first shooter with a real, engaging narrative. It was almost like an entirely new genre of game was invented.

I would preffer the former. Just like was the case with Samurai Jack I loved the first few episodes, but mid-way it went to shit and the ending was absolutely horrible. But the fact that I got an ending gave me the relief of "Well okay. It's over. I'm done with that, time to move on" rather than constantly browsing articles and catching rumours of what might've happened / will happen.

Same with HL. Just end it already so I can have a reason to not give a damn about it again.

The game isn't good now, but back then the amount of mechanics introduced was staggering. That's on top of the decent music and narrative. It's a tech demo alright, but it's one with a little effort put into it.

The problem with episode 3 is that is has been hyped up to such ridiculous standards now that it has to be completely, 100% PERFECT, or it will be deemed as a failure by the community and be the laughingstock/disappointment of a generation.

It's a shame too, when I finished episode 2 I just stared at the screen with my mouth open as the credits rolled. I finally understood why the world wanted episode 3 so much.
