If you haven't had friends growing up you won't have the people skills to make good friends as an adult. You won't have that part of the brain that makes you considerate of other people's feelings. It's not that you're selfish, it's just that you have been alone for so long that you are not used to think of others.
Most friends you have as an adult are fair weather friends anyway. The clever thing to do is to have friends is to only rely on them for companionship. Trouble begins when you expect them to support you or care about parts of your life that don't benefit them.
