Depends on what you're into really. I'll list a couple that I found actually held my interest greatly.

>Arpeggio of Blue Steel
>Kancolle
>Girls und Panzer

They all have an actual story to them and the first three I found had a story that was actually a little bit different than the typical "underdogs kicking arse" cliche, or it has it, but it does it well in a way that sort of cancels the cliche out. The best part about them is there is no slice of life stuff, or minimal, and it focuses on the story a bit.

I listed GuP because although it's very cliche, it's a nice story and the tanks they use look amazing.

Don't watch anime, anime is shit because they only make anime out of source material with potential to make a lot of sales through tie-in products like figurines and dakimakuras and other such shit.
If you want to consume japanese media, read manga, the production costs of manga are relatively low so you find all sorts of actually interesting stuff made by people with original ideas residing inside their heads.
My personal favorite is Strongest Legend Kurosawa, it deals with issues especially a bit older (lets say 25+) /r9k/ types can identify with.

I like DragonBall, Trigun, Samurai Champloo, and Psycho-Pass.

The timing in DragonBall and Trigun can be fucking retarded at times, but I still enjoy them. I haven't watched enough Psycho-Pass to truly recommend it, but so far I am enjoying it.

OP i think you simply might not like anime. If you watch a bit of one series from each genre and you dont enjoy any of them, then anime is not for you.

You need to watch comfy anime. These anime series often dont include action scenes nor male characters into it. Their sole purpose is entertain and give you a good time. I'd highly recommend Hidamari Sketch, it's the best anime ever made.

Legend of Galactic Heroes is long, but honestly once you get into it, it's too short. It's a Galactic War epic. There are no Aliens, just war, tactics, history, philosophy, politics, conspiracy, internal conflict, revolution, terrorism, etc. You really should watch it, even if you don't like anime.

Kemono Friends looks like it'd be awful, but it's good. It's about a girl who goes on an adventure to find out she's human, learning what it means to be human, what friendship is, and what happened to the park she woke up in.

Nichojou. Even if you're not a weed you'll enjoy this. The animation, music, characters, voice acting, and pretty much everything else is top notch. The humor may be hard to get into at first, especially the Japanese jokes, but after you get a few episodes in you'll want to keep watching.
